I got TF2 yesterday after trying the trial and I'm not dissapointed at all.
I've filtered full servers,empty servers,locked servers and when I click refresh I still get a minimum of 800, so yes, there are a lot of people playing.
Spy is totally useless, you need to grab a heavy and start eating sandviches for the good of the team .. Wait .. Spy is useless if you are bad at playing one :P A good spy can turn the tide of a battle! Especially ones skilled enough to kill an engineer and THEN sap their sentry without getting hit.
Well I'm still a newb,since I've been playing it for 3 days only, but I've taken out sentries and than the engineer :P (Except when he's got his back in a corner :S )

It's easier to do it that way. But if you are fast enough you can exploit the fact that SGs take a few seconds to turn around, and get up behind them, backstab the engineer and very quickly switch to sapper and sap the SG before it shoots you.

Its really not, both CS:1.6 and CS: source have more players, along with Bad compnay 2, Battlfield 2, COD4. Still TF2 is a good game, its bit slower paced than some other shooters but it is a blast if you have people to play with.

Did that recently, and earned "The man with the broken guns" achievement.
Eh when I first played TF2 I got my ass handed to me. Then I played Heavy. After about 5 minutes I was pro and owning noobs. Scout is my favorite class now though
TF2 is a blast, ive got some 50 hours or so played and have yet to play as a medic or spy for any long period of time. There are a lot of people online at any time and I have to be unable to join a nearly full server and have a good time. It can be difficult to get into as often you will be killed very fast if you dont know what your doing. Best advice would be to start with some of the easy classes, a heavy is easy to pick up and play, and to an extent the sniper as outside of getting a hang of charging shots and which locations to look out for you should be ok.

Well yeah, but no more than with any other online game. Everything is quite easy to pick up.
Just pick a class and if you don't feel like you're improving, pick another one. Then when you find one you're comfortable with, stick with it.
They also added an offline practice mode in the latest update. It's not as fun as playing online, but it's a perfect opportunity to try all the classes and find one you like before you venture online.

It's unique, I can't think of a game that's like TF2 (Except TFC, but I guess that doesn't count)
