I have 5.1 surround speakers for my rigg and currently I'm just using an integrated sound card. Does anybody know if there will be a recognizable difference if I were to get an actual sound card?

If so what is a good card to get along with my speakers?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT:

I have an ASUS moboand it uses SoundMax.

And I use my speakers for music, gaming, movies, and for TV once I get a TV Tuner.

Post which mobo and onboard sound you have. Mine is an Asus with Realtek surround.

I use my onboard 7.1 sound purely for my headset and mic(for online gaming) and I have my 5.1 speakers runing through my X-Fi Music card. It's lacking some of the extra inputs that other cards have but Creative makes good, solid quality equipment. I never have to switch plugs that way.

I think you get more software processing options with soundcards but honestly, you'll probably never know the difference in the sound.

It depends what you're doing with it. If your gaming and you add a sound card, you will notice extra effects and sounds that you've never heard before.

I have an old Audigy card that I use. Truth be told, I don't hear any difference from the onboard sound on my Asus P5K.

My last motherboard, Asus A7n8X or something, had much worse onboard sound. There was a big difference.

I have an Audigy, X-Fi, and Intel High Definition sound.

The integrated solution actually sounds better than the Audigy, and it's not that far behind the X-Fi.

So no, sound cards do not make a big difference over modern integrated solutions.

I've never used any sound cards before, but onboard sounds good enough to me,and i wouldn't want to take the chance that a sound card could sound WORSE than onboard,so yeah IMO sound cards aren't worth it.

Now Video Cards on the other hand, even if its a FX 5200 PCI or something like that, its most certainly better than onboard video, trust me i have a FX 5200 PCI myself,i can play Rome: Total Realism MUCH better than the intergrated i used before.

If you want EAX effects, then definitely. Also, if you want hardware-accelerated sound period in games that use DirectSound rather than OpenAL should you be running Windows Vista, then a Creative card(or the Auzentech X-Fi Prelude)with ALchemy is a MUST. (This is the exact reason why the Prelude is on my shopping list.) Of course, I probably shouldn't be one to talk, given that I don't have audiophile-grade equipment and that my best sound card is a SB Live! Value. Then again, chances are I won't know what great sound quality is like until I hear it myself and become quite hard-pressed to go back.
