I would say go for it. XP is a good OS and I still have it installed on one of my older machines. Microsoft no longer supports XP. Windows 7 is the way to go. I'm running Windows 7 64bit on a couple of machines now, and it's great. I have not had any issues with games not working...more often than not, if a game doesn't work it's because some older games don't like multi-core cpus or drivers are not up to date on your gpu. The other thing I love about Windows 7 is that it automatically recognizes hardware that is installed and will recommend the latest drivers for you. It's a solid OS.
edit: Also, it doesn't afraid of anything.
Duel boot. XP is still one amazing OS and if you like old school gaming, you would still be able to enjoy alot of old games (16 bit color gaming). I use windows 7 and XP. Still personally love XP for its simplicity in processes but 7 is the new Os. 7 is a very nice Os but I say just duel boot. Partition or get another hd and install 7 on it and enjoy the best of both worlds. Its what I do. Personally, this is sad to say, until new consoles come out, you really won't have a real mandotory reason to move to windows 7 outside of a game a year or so unless you want very nice eye candy features and directx 10/11. Oh, Microsoft still supports XP. They no longer support XP service pack 2. They still support service pack 3.
As others have said it isn't worth it for just "one" game, but you will find that as the year carries out if you stay with win xp your gaming options will become more and more limited. I think it is just a case of it not being economically to make the game use Dx9 and Dx10 and since the market seems to be a majority of Dx10 users now developers are leaving Dx9 behind.
It really is time all PC gamers put Dx9 on a floating funeral pyre and gave it a good old traditional viking funeral :D
I wouldn't do it for one game regardless of how good or bad it will be. It simply ain't worth it. Now i'm not sure what the trend is right now, but if the trend of migrating from XP to Vista/7 increases or is on the increase now, then you can certainly use that as a justification to upgrade your OS.
the truth is I think the first Just Cause is not a good game, what u think of just Cause 2??TravixyzI was at ur situation a couple of months back... JC2 was awesome fun.. W7 is great... Not going back...
Unless you're dirt poor, theres no real excuse to not upgrade your system. I do periodic upgrades all the time after I've saved up enough cash for each upgrade.

I was on the fence just like you i didn't wanted to upgrade to win 7 just for a game, Besides I love XP, for me it's one of the best OS there is, if you have a problem with it most of the time is very easy to fix
having said that, I wanted to play just cause 2, I read from some people that it was a great game so I wanted to play it, and decided to bite the bullet and buy win 7, so I did and you know what?, it's the best thing I ever did, this OS works great, granted I had to make a few adjustments but it's customized just the way I like it, so far zero problems with it, I still have XP on another PC but my main PC has win7
like other people have said i like the fact that it automatically recognizes your hardware and then prompt you to download the right drivers for it, the user interface is great (I never used win vista) so the interface is kind of strange for me but intuitive, the performance in GTA IV was better in 7 than it was in winXP
I thought it was going to suffer a frame rate hit with gta iv on win 7 but no, for me it works better on 7.
So I really recommend windows 7 man, try it.
PS. I never thought I would say that LoL.
Personally I'm waiting until the next generation of consoles comes around until I'm upgrading - for a couple of reasons
1. High end PC gaming is DEAD - and good riddance. Say what you will, but the times when your high end PC became outdated in 1,5 years are over. I mean, you can still run every single PC game with a rig from early-mid 2006 (Core 2 Duo + 8800 GTS/GTX will run everything you throw at it.)
2. Vista aka 'Windows 7 commercial beta version' was abandoned to die a slow painful death (well, not really abandoned but why would you use Vista when 7 is basically the same OS except in every way better), who says they won't do the same thing with 7? They seem to want to release a new OS every couple of years so you might as well wait.
3. XP is still supported until 2014. The vast majority of games are still supporting XP and unless the devs/publishers seriously want to limit their audience (and blame piracy afterwards) they will still support XP. The most hardware/OS demanding PC games these days are console ports (which is pretty sad when you think about it) so I really couldn't care less if I don't get to play such titles as Shadowrun, Just Cause 2 and Halo 2.
4. I really can't be bothered to install every single piece of software and game AGAIN. Only to find out that most of them won't work without tweaking or at all. Yeah, I love to play old games and I'm having enough of a hard time with multi-core issues and Nvidia being a jackass by cutting out features that were previously supported.
5. No DirectSound? No EAX without EMULATION?! Really now. What this basically means is that Windows 98 is more advanced in the audio department than Vista/7. You might not care if you're using an integrated sound card and speakers that came with your pre-built PC (which sadly seems to be the case for the majority of PC gamers) but for some of us who actually care about audio quality this is laughable.
Sorry for the long rant.

About time, I hated upgrading my PC every 1-2 years.. my current PC (nearly 3 years old) runs everything on mostly High...

With that thinking then you will NEVER upgrade. Same happens with hardware, why buy a new video card if the next one is coming. W8 might come in 2 years, might not.. but W7 is solid NOW...

You have no idea how much FUN JC2 is....lol

Yes, if you like really old games then I wouldn't upgrade... but you can always dual-boot XP and W7...

I didn't hear about DSound or EAX.... pls tell me about that...

Indeed. It's the best thing to happen to PC gaming since the invention of sound cards. People who want their 1920x1080 with 16xAA can have it but you don't have to spend 1000$+ every 2 years just to be able to play the latest games.

That's exactly what I do. Heck, I was using Windows 98 SE until 2004 when it started getting unsupported. My policy is that I won't upgrade unless I can't run the games I want to play at 30 FPS at minimum settings.
You have no idea how much FUN JC2 is....lol
Considering how I wasted 50€ on Just Cause 1 and how much I hated it... I don't care if it's the best game ever made. Besides, I have GTA.
Yes, if you like really old games then I wouldn't upgrade... but you can always dual-boot XP and W7...
I'm already dual booting to Vista. I installed Vista in 2007 and I've booted there maybe two or three times since. So even if there's a game that doesn't support XP I can just use Vista.
I didn't hear about DSound or EAX.... pls tell me about that...
Vista/7 don't support DirectSound or EAX anymore. EAX is available through emulation, but only on Creative cards. It basically means that Windows 95/98 has better sound quality in games than Vista/7.

I'm seeing less and less games with EAX in their options.... so what's the audio these days..? a new technology ? My audio sounds awesome...and I only have a 2.1 Creative Speaker setup... Also, if you have Vista in dualboot....please try JC2 (as good as GTA in action, even better in parts), or try the demo and I'm sure you will love it.
To be honest guys i dont agree with the "high end pc gaming" My pc cant run games at very high settings, i need the new videocards to do that. It is sad though because it if was true i will be finally thankfull for not having to upgrade all the time. Or is it that nvidia is restocking and 9 series are basicly 8 series and the gtx 260 is not much more powerfull from mine? Ahh consoles remain the same but requirements are keep on rising, especially if you use dx10 instead of dx9.dakan45My PC is nearly 3 years old and I can run 99.5% of the games on mostly HIGH (of course with only 2-4 AA and 2-4 AF). How old is urs?
Not only that but if you're running a PC game at 1680x1050 it already looks much much better than any 640p/720p console game, even if your graphics settings are set at medium which is a.k.a console graphics. Resolution alone kills consoles.nintendog66
please...why even bother comparing to consoles? better than console is a given, it isn't worth of mentioning at all. 720p gaming is so yesteryears...back when before widescreen monitor gone mainstream, there already was 1600x1200 (4:3) screen...
anyway, to the thread question.
if you're still very much in love with older games, keep your XP rig (I keep my athlon XP lappy for games like SS2); then build a new windows 7 x64 system.
if you don't like antiques, well, just upgrade it, but not for one game; it's for all current and future games. heck even Deus Ex runs great on 7 x64.
Ahh, i wish devs bother to optimize. Does atleat just cause run well? Because the previous ran amazingly well.nintendog66if you're running a PC game at 1680x1050 it already looks much much better than any 640p/720p console game, even if your graphics settings are set at medium which is a.k.a console graphics. Tell you what dakan45 connect your PS3 up to your monitor and then play it whilst sitting up close to the monitor if you still think a res of 1280 x 720 is sharper than a res of 1680 x 1050 then you really need to get to an opticians quick smart. The console version can get away with a low res because most people play console games sitting at least 4 - 5 ft away from the TV couple that with the fact HD TV's don't come anywhere close to the precision and sharpness of a monitor that helps to make the game look acceptable on the console.
