I'm curious. Do you buy the Collectors Edition?

There have been a few games where I couldn't wait to be released. I was so excited for them and to help support them, I bought the Collectors edition of the game. The few times I've done this, I've questioned why - after the fact. For an in-game pet? A alternate outfit? The soundtrack I never listed to? The book of game art I looked through once? I've found this has not been money well spent and here I am readyto pre-order Dead Space 2 and actually considered the Collectors edition. I think I learned my lesson. For me, it's not necessary.

Thoughts?

Nah, I don't bother. Most of my games now are from digital download anyway, so it doesn't come with collector's ed. perks. The last thing I bought that was close to a collector's edition was the WC3 Battlechest, and I only did it because it was really cheap.

I almost bought the Starcraft 2 one, but I have no need for the WoW pet, and I had the idea to put Brood War(and did it) on a flash drive a week before the announcement. So I didn't see it to be worth the extra $40.

Not many, most of the time the extras aren't really worth it. I do have a softspot for steelbook versions of games though and might pay $10 extra just to get the tin case, I have a few of those already. The best value CE I got was for the Witcher, huge box with a great art book and making of dvd. If I'm really looking forward to a game then I'd consider the collectors. I personally am not a fan of early access to unlocks and items in multiplayer games. Instead I'd rather a tangible trinket of some kind. I always keep my eye out for CEs but usually decide they aren't worth it.

Nope. Seems like a waste of money to me. I'm the kind of gamer that 95% of my purchases are severly discounted though, so getting me to even pay retail is a challenge, lol.

I used to, but then I realized I was just paying the publisher $10 to $20 extra for some trinket or disc that cost them a dollar or two to manufacture, and I wasn't really doing anything with it other than sticking it on a shelf to collect dust.

Maybe but doesn't really sound like it... Sounds like he just always buys his games cheap, like steam sales or whatever. By not paying retail, sounds like he meant he won't pay full price very often which is sound reasoning lol.

In certain games I perfer the collectors editions, but only if it has the upgrade extras I look for. Many recent games released as CE have mostly worthless junk that's not worth the additional price. I look for mainly two things.....1) the casing it comes in, such as a high quality metal or leather bound material and.... 2) an indepth manual, again with quality binding and printing.

The problem is, these pretty much don't exist anymore. I have a bunch of CE games for the PC, but only 3 or 4 really come close to what I want in them. Splinter Cell:Chaos Theory, Civ IV, Prey and maybe Halo 2 (Xbox). The last one I purchased was Mass Effect 2 CE. It's was (meh) just ok, nothing really special. But the 1st three I listed were very nice, great display pieces that I really don't see much of any more.

I was interested in the CE for Civ V, but after doing a bit of research, I realized It wasn't worth it, which greatly disappointed me. It seems developers today issue these so called collectors editions with mostly items that I would just trash, in compairson to games made 10-15 years ago that came with lots of goodies packed with the standard game for no extra charge.....How things have changed......:(

Heh, sorry, but nope. Most of my PC games I buy on Steam sales....but I buy a lot of them. I probably have about 130 games on my account. I also visit the Cheap Ass Gamer website often to find good deals elsewhere.

id do it for the right price.. before an error correction at bestbuy back in 08 at the nightfall release the CE was 59 bucks up here :P as opposed to the 95 it eventually came to be. wether this is a 1 store incident or a nation wide thing ill never know.. all i know is i bought the CE for the same price as the regular game at release and not a penny more :D

i also sometimes buy leftover pre-order games people have failed to claim.

normally though i save such a thing for hardware not software.. i got the codmw2 hd 5830 for example.. and wayy back when the hl2 radeon 9800 xt

Very rarely will I and it usually has to meet 2 guidelines for me to bother with it.

1. Is it cheap as hell

2. Does it give me something worthwhile

The latest collectors edition that fit that criteria for me was the LOTRO Moria expansion. Got it for 10 bucks and it came with a ton of stuff so it was worth it. I will rarely if ever pay 50 dollars for a game let alone shell out another 10 (or more) for the collectors. Always gotta be cheap cheap cheap :P

I do, if the CE's come with substantial packaging. For example, the Bioshock 2 CE was great; it included a vinyl album and pretty art book. An example of a CE that sucked was the one for Dragon Age: Origins; [sarcasm] woo hoo, they gave me a tin box and a rag with writing on it. [/sarcasm]

Yes, and not just for games, but movie DVDs as well. It's one of my guilty addictions. I often have to force myself to buy regular movie DVDs when I see Collectors' Edition versions, because I no longer have any space to put them. I'm just a sucker for extra stuff.

Nope. Usually a waste of money.

The only collector's edition I've ever owned was of the original Command & Conquer: Red Alert, and that was a gift.

I like to buy collectors ed, sure, but rarely on release day.... only in recent memory can I remember buying Arkham Asylum collector's ed for the in-pack batarang thing which I went a bit geeky over.... ha ha. I mostly buy them when the game is far down the line in used game sections, where it usually only costs a couple of quid more than the regular copy, so I like to get them that way.

It depends on the game. I bought the Collector's edition for Fear 2, because it came with a really cool case, and a copy of Fear 1. My GF bought me the collector's edition of Civ V because it seems to have quite a lot of cool stuff with it. I bought the collector's edition of Darksiders because...well because it was the only version released on the PC xD But I would have anyway because of its amazing box and artwork book.

Only if it comes with something useful, like included expansion packs, Soundtracks (if the music in the game is worth a crap, unlike gta) other than that, I don't bother with them.

Only if I'm really anticipating the game that's coming out.
