Does anyone here ever go back to games that they have already beaten and beat them again?
Or play old competetive games such as Starcraft, Diablo 2, Counterstrike, or Quake 3?
It just seems like a waste of time to me. Look to the future!

playing some of the best games ever made seems like a waste of time to you? having more fun is a waste of time?
right now i have installed:
fallout
doom/doom2/final doom with doom legacy
dungeon keeper 2
system shock 2
and, while not old, i will soon be reinstaling f.e.a.r and escape from butcher bay for their fifth play through each
i frequently replay old games, or good, new games - some experiences are worth having more than once... some are worth having a lot more than once... look to the future? i'll take shock 2 over bioshock any day, and doom over crysis

i kinda get the impression from that that you see games as a challenge to overcome, rather than an experience to be had - not everyone plays games for the sole purpose of beating them, i play games for the pleasure of experience, like a book, or film...

like a book, games are a huge time investment. Actually, games are a bigger investment, and I think replaying a long game like fallout or baldurs gate is a waste, considering there are so many more games to be experienced.

You are made of fail. Replaying some of the greatest games ever is NOT a waste of time. I have starcrat and brood war, system shock 2, deus ex, halo pc, cod, AoM, HL1, Counter Strike, and Doom 1 installed right now. Only Quake 4, CoD2, HL2 and F.E.A.R in the "new" games department, and i have more fun playing the older games.

Didn't know people could be made of fail. That insult was a failure.
Anyways, games that I have already played seem stale to me. Have fun playing those games over and over again because I sure wouldn't.

Im just not even going to say anything to the first part of that, because an insult was out of place in the first place, but when a game comes out thats nearly as high quality as these, i buy it, play it, and play it again later. So, what games do you play all the time if you just beat the new ones and toss em aside? Surely there cant be enough games that would interest you to do that.

When I get a new game I play it until I have gotten the most out of it. Usually it lasts more than a month. Then I find closure and if it was good I keep the memories of it in my mind. I don't need to replay the game to remember how good it was. I guess that is just me because I get bored playing a game I already milked before.

Why would you basically admit to doing yourself something by making a thread about it then proceed to bash it saiying its a waste of time??
This thread is a big waste of time

that's fair enough - but i take quality over quantity, i don't really want to play a numbers game here, but i've been gaming nearly two decades, so i've had ample opportunity to play most of the best games as they come out, and over the last... pretty much two years... there's been little worth playing, especially for a gamer who tends to put in at least 2-3 hours a day, and i find myself drawn to the better, older games to fill my gaming time
i can see not wanting to play baldur's gate more than a couple times - i've only played it twice and don't intend to play it again, as it's - as you say - a serious time investment... but not all games take 40+ hours to complete...
what do you find yourself playing - assuming you game daily - to keep yourself entertained? i tend not to play multiplayer except with friends, so single player gaming takes up probably 75% of my gaming time, and as i say, i'd rather replay a great game than play a mediocre game for the first time... i enjoy new experience, but i think new experience for the sake of new experience is pointless, when we game for pleasure
quake 3! There hasnt been an fps as simple and manic since. Hmm well actually half life 2 deatmatch is nearly as manic, but doesnt have the same feel (not worse, just different).
Why would you not go back to old games from time to time? If you loved them before, you'll still love them. For some its the story (Final Fantasy's for me), others because they are just sheer fun (like quake 3). Theres no reason you cant do this while looking foward to the next big thing.
Currently playing Commander Keen Complete Pack.. Just finished Call of Duty United Offensive for the dozenth time.. Still a great game even years later after its initial release..
I believe in playing old games.. In fact I recommend it.. (that is if your ever to call yourself a "gamer" and be serious about it)
i still love old games!
one that you mentioned that was not replayable (baldurs gate) i have ran through multiple times along with the origional neverwinter nights, still on Everquest, Soldier of Fortune 2, and System Shock 2
alot of new games have definently gotten better in the graphics but alot of what i played lacked for story. Or they fell way too short. Good example would be Heavenly Sword on the PS3. The game wasnt bad but i beat it in one day.

The future has been extremely bleak up to this point. Even now, though, we still have to wait a long while for certain games to come out.
By the way, games like Starcraft (well, especially Starcraft) will always be played until either the players die, or the sequel arrives on the shelves.
I'm going to assume people are going to play Starcraft 2 until time stops.
And the koreans...well, they're another story. They'll probably be playing that until we find a way to live on the Moon/Mars. :p
I go back to my old games from time to time. The ones that I play the most are Xcom 1 and 2 and Transport Tycoon. Loved those Microprose games.
My view on this subject is that gamers play the old games again and again because they find something in them that they dont find in recent games. Playing old games also "speaks" very well of the person that does it: when you find a gamer that does this, you know that he/she places greater value on the story or the gameplay, you know that they can accept a game regardless of how the graphics look.
If you dont like to play old games, well, good for you!!! I really like to play them every once in a while.
If i can get more entertainment again out of an old game then with a new game, then why would i play the new game?
To TC, so you only watch a movie once too?
counterstrike source this week; last week Heroes of might and magic 4....
i play CS this week getting ready for TF2
no, i'm a graphics whore :P
the only game that i play with bad graphics is War3, and i only play TTW on it... then the second oldest is HL2 with FFactory Mod
just remembered 1, natural selection, an half life mod, just until NS2 comes out, then it will be out too xD
