English is not my first language, so now I'm trying to play all my games without subtitles to practice (and it's working really well)

How do you use subtitles?

When you are dealing with bad audio feed, voice acting, effect sounds and etc. subtitles are the best choice ... or if a game is via some community patch made in german or whatever audio language the english subtitles are your best friend. When the audio is good however - no, I don't rely on subtitles ...

Subtitles all the time. It get's annoying when I don't hear someone because the game decides i'm not listening to someone just because I look over their shoulder (looks at Skyrim, HL2)

Subtitles ON. At all times. It's difficult for me to understand what the voice actors say without headphones, which I don't use most of the time I play.

Subtitles on always. I have bad hearing so this helps me catch on what words exactly are characters are saying.

Always on, even if I can hear everything clearly, I just enjoy games more like this.

I would say 90% of the time I play with the sound turned off so subtitles are invaluable to me to figure out what the story is actually about. Thankfully the inclusion of subtitles these days is becoming a norm but I remember the bad old days when you took pot luck as to whether a game came with subtitles.

Always on. Too much background noise in some games to catch everything they say.

Always off. I find them distracting and unimmersive, and when I have subtitles on I always end up ignoring the voice acting because I read much faster in my head than voice actors do out loud.

I use subtitles often, but I'm trying to play games without them. It feels realistic because if you don't pay attention, as in real life, you miss out. The only thing I don't like is that sometimes subtitles can ruin what's about to be said or happen.

Always on. I always seem to have a hard time understanding some things without subtitles. Sometimes they read their lines too fast, not clearly or not loud enough. Also most times when I play there are outside distractions from others in my family. I can turn up the volume and annoy everyone or just put on subtitles. I generally don't like headphones. They always make my ears hurt after just a few hours. I only use headphones to play late at night when everyone is sleeping and it needs to be quiet.

I turn themoff, always. It just breaks immersion for me, unless it's an RPG :P.

But if English isn't your 1st language then I would recommendthe sub tittles...for what ever language your trying to learn :).

I always have them on, to the point that I'm too used to them so I don't find them unimmersive; rather, it feels like something is missing to me if I play a game without subtitles.

Depends on the game. Skyrim, which is filled with dialogue, is nice with subtitles on. If you don't hear a word or something, you can just read what the person just said, or if there's a sound louder than the talking person, or if you want to be extra sure on what someone's talking about, etc. In a game like say, Dead Space, I usually don't play with subs to keep it as immersive as possible.

I'm practicing hearing english. I can read english fine, the problem is understanding what someone says, that's why I turn them off. I'm getting better much faster with subtitles off. I'm now watching TV without subtitles too :)

Always off. Unless there's a language issue for some people, I could understand.. but those subtitles totally kill the immersion.
