My current one is AMD Athlon 64 X 4200+ at 2.2 and I fear its the only thing holding my computer back.

Would I see any performance difference upgrading to 6400?

Rest of computer

Dual 2900XT

2 gigs of Ram

Win XP.

Not really, it curtainly wouldn't be worth the $. Have you tried OCing? You never really want to 'upgrade' from one CPU to another of the same kind. Like in your case X2 to X2. A X2 to C2D would be a little better but you are better off waiting for Phenom if you want AMD.

AMD Phenoms are for sale in stores now. I think they are pre-orders though. So I would go for one of those if I was on socket am2

nope they release coming up here. AMD is releasing 8core CPUs by around 2009, but it should be in Q3 of 2008 to Q4 of 2008

No. You can even buy some of the Phenom chips now.

if you wanta CPU now go for the 6000 the 6400 is made for overclocking. that is unless you want to overclock then get the 6400. but you can easily oc the 6000 to beyond the 6400 stock. But you could also wait for the phenoms.

Well if I was going to get something now it would be a Q6600 because I'd have to get a new mobo/ram anyway.

wait for the phenoms then cause they will kill the q6600. by the way and am2 mobo is compatible with the new phenoms so you could get a 6000x2 and then upgrade later.

|In pre-tests the Q6600 outperforms all the current Phenoms (2.3Ghz-2.5ghz)out I believe. Things could change though, but the lowest priced Phenom x4 is priced at the same price as a Q6600

I cant get intel, if I get intel I need to change MB, if I change MB I have to change Vid cards.

Staying with AM2 as long as I can.

I never said you were, I was just making a comment to a persons comment in here. I love AMD myself, but I ended up with Intel cause I got a E6420 for $75 and this Q6600 I got for around $200, all new. Also I won my 8800gts KO in a giveaway contest that cost me $100 for a charity. So thats how I endedup here. My goal was to do a AMD/ATI setup. So if I was to have my choice, I would do a Phenom FX setup with dual R680 CPUs, which would result in 4 GPUS, casue theyre dual GPUs on one board.
