Really? Dr. Amar Bose invented psychoacoustics, and Bose continues to make breakthroughs in audio engineering. It is a fallacy to compare them against a high-end two-channel audio manufacturer; they design audio products for specific purposes. They invented and continue to make some of the top noise-canceling headphones on the market. The 901s were one of the best-selling - and rightly so - speakers of their day. Hundreds of audio manufacturers have either reverse-engineered their designs or outright adopted their engineering philosophy. Definitive Technology, Harman, and Warfedale are all well-known to be proponents of psychoacoustics. Just recently, in fact (and to the OP's question), Definitive Technology came out with a sound bar eerily similar in design to Bose's (the Mythos SSA-50) with some marketing support discussing psychoacoustics. There are some companies that I'll agree are more splash than substance (e.g. Skullcandy) and others that have cheap products designed for undercutting (Coby), but Bose is neither of them. They are a cutting-edge audio engineering firm, even if they are not an audiophile firm. Now if you want to say that their products are overpriced, or that their products are taken by competing firms and improved, that's an angle I can endorse! Happy gaming, Boz

That's one way to look at it, but Bose themselves markets as if they're going up against most of these other audio companies. With comments like 'our wave radio ($580) will make you think you're listening to a system that costs 5x more' they've made it pretty clear. Bose had their time to shine long ago, just because they do things in a different way does not mean they're better, when the 901 came out there was a lot of buzz from the mainstream market, but even in the audio community the 901 was never seen as anything more then a commercial success. While it would be false to deny Bose credit for research, I just find that there are better roads to go down.

I've heard better, but I will say that the Bose over-ear headphones are the nicest things I've ever put on my head, as far as comfort is concerned.

haha, first time I've seen that. Nice, gonna have to use that.

As for Bose themselves, I've always thought they were a bit overrated. Then again, I always run into people who praise them like its the second coming of christ, and when I name manufacturers that I believe to be of better quality/value, I get a blank stare / ???? .

I listen to a Bose wave radio/cd at the place I work and was thinking of what if they could stretch out the distance between speakers as in a soundbar and perhaps have a subwoofer in between? It is an idea.

A lot of people tear Bose down. They're not abysmal. They're not the best either.

My parents purchased a wave radio like 10 years ago. I must admit, for its diminutive size it sounds damn good, albeit, bass lacking. However, that is to be expected for a table radio.

Typically, Bose's price tag does not justify the quality of audio. I think if the retail cost of Bose went down their reputation would become more favorable to the audio world.

It's like Koss, for example. Koss doesn't make crap, but they dont make the best either. In Koss' price point they are an excellent value. It's hard to beat a pair of Portapros at $35.

The wave radio at work doesn't have an antennae hooked up but pulls in stations really well and when I fly it seems the big deal is Bose noise cancelling headphones. I bought a phillips noise cancelling headphones and it fell apart!

I'll like to add something here. All of these audiophile companies dont market themselves in lesser countries like mine whereas bose not only comes to my country but is actually the most well marketed international tech company in pakistan. Not only are they the only company which provides the full portfolio of their products over here but they let you demo each and every product. You ask what is so special about a demo? Well over here there is not much concept of such a thing, you just have to do as much research on internet as possible before buying something. When I was buying my first pair of expensive headphones, sony wouldnt even letme try their highest end model. It was cheaper than the bose and might have been just as good but I couldnt take a risk when I was so much in love with the bose and had no idea how comfortable and good sounding the sony was.

The only other company which provides free demos for everything is apple. Ironically both these companies happen to be the ones hated most by "enthusiasts" when in my opinion a true enthusiast would appreciate companies which try to reach the whole world. I mean if not for bose spending so much on marketing I'll prolly have some $20 sony headphones right now.

Very good points. Personally I'm not a fan of Apple, but I never bothered to consider what you just brought up.

Well Bose seems to make pretty good outdoor speakers too. People are placing them 25-30 feet apart.
