Do you think the Battlefield series will ever get away from the COD formula?

For me the Battlefield series was at it's best when it was slower pace with no regenerating health and a emphasis on teamwork and vehicles not so much infantry combat. Battlefield 2 to me is the perfect BF it wasn't arcadey and it wasn't a simulation it was somewhere in the middle and to me that was the sweet spot. These days the series is extremely casual and is more focus on destruction and fast pace gameplay. In my opinion the series has lost what made it special. Does any old BF2 vets feel the same way here? and do you think we are way past the point of series going back to being more slower pace and less hand holdy or do you think Dice will play it safe and keep it casual forever?

I thought the entire reason that the maps of Battlefield prior to BF3 was so small was for the players to keep up the pace? That the old mechanics simply were the product of what influences those games had for it's time. But at it's core Battlefield has always been about fast paced full scaled warfare.

I've been playing BF since the 3, 4 is my favorite, and V is just like the TC said, too fast paced. What I would do is stimulate teamwork by limiting medics, scouts, and support soldiers to 1 per squad. And I'd get rid of planes, they don't really belong in BF, it's always 1 or 2 jerks ruining everyone else's game. Yes, I do suck at flying planes, but that's not really important. XD

Personally, I think the gunplay is the best it has ever been. The biggest issue right now is the maps. Most are very close quarter infantry focused. If you play maps like Hamada and Panzerstorm, you will see that they play similar to older BF games. However, these newer games do not match the depth of BF2. The commander system and destroying or protecting the assets like the satellite and artillery was great. There was also more incentive to hold and capture the bases because they held the vehicles. There were good battles defending the airfield or sneaking in and hijacking an enemy plane or tank. Now you spawn into vehicles and it is not the same. Things have been dumbed down for sure, but I still love BF and it remains the best MP franchise out there IMO.

Great points man sneaking in the airfield and stealing a jet was always a rush.

@warmblur: I'd say Planetside 2 is your best option for something a little slower and team focused, other games like Arma 3, Squad, Insurgency are also good options.

EA went for the easy money making when copying CoD formula - can't blame them it's EA.

It's sad when you've got publishers who make big decisions into game development where their role should be PR only.

You know I came into this thread with the intent of saying "But Battlefield isn't CoD! IT'S BATTLEFIELD!"

But the formula really has changed, especially in the last two games. The series is still not half as arcadey and dumb as CoD, but it is definitely going in that direction.

I remember when a tank would show up, infantry would panic and it would feel like a triumph when it was finally destroyed. Now it seems like the tanks are the ones that are scared because they get killed by a lot of things now haha. I'd never call Battlefield "slow-paced", but the game used to be a lot more strategic. A thinking-man's multiplayer FPS.

How is Planetside 2 these days? Checked it out a while ago, thought it was fun but I guess I had something else to play.

The concept of MMOFPS games really appeals to me, I wish there were more.

the new bf games dont appeal to me, BF2 was the peak and I also like BFBC2 and still play it. The series strayed from what set it apart from everyone else and feels cheap. I now hangout mostly on arma 3 , squad

I've kinda embraced the new style of BF games, even though I also prefer the more tactical, team-oriented ones that used to come out. Its still a lot of fun running around with a squad of friends on voice chat. they also made BFV less casual compared to 1 by adjusting the spotting system, limiting health regen and ammo and speeding up the time to kill a bit.

BFV would be my favourite entry since BC2 if it had better maps and less net code issues (ie. getting behind cover then having hits register late and dying)

I only play the sp campaigns and the story and characters need improvement, most of the time in an combat fps is spent aiming down sight so it would help if the weapons have better graphic designs, don't really care for basic world war 1 and 2 weapons.

I think they would be playing it close to the sun if they chose a COD formula. Though it would really interesting to experience.

I sure hope they will consider moving to a more bf2 formula, or something alike, consider the flop that bf5 was.

Starting with the Bad Company series, the Battlefield series has gone out of their way to become more like CoD, from focusing more on infantry combat, to decreasing the amount of sandbox gameplay, to speeding up the time it takes to kill someone, to making the maps smaller; they want the CoD money.

Sorry. Not a BF vet, but a BF3 vet for sure. Got to mid 30s colonel or so and I don't believe I ever played a better multiplayer since or ever.

So maybe I don't know, but I always felt that BF was the opposite of Cod. I get it, you're right that it's maybe more runny gunny than a non hp-regening game, but it's definitely a formula that creates a damn good game. It's solid, that's for sure. CoD is just braindead by comparison (well, to pretty much any other game to be honest). Battlefield 3 definitely has really intense and deep firefights and 1-on-1 skirmishes. There are many ways you can kill someone and each gunfight... sort of... has some technique I would even venture to say. You know, such as you have the choice of jogging around with a pistol if you want, and that's a nicely creative side. Or kill someone with a blowtorch. (Although yes that's hard)

And BFV is probably not a flop, or at least I hope not. I only haven't bought the game because I have my hands full, it's finals week, and I feel bad for not getting it because the game really really looks excellent.
