From what I hear they were planning to release by the end of this year but I heard that Valve plans to make no annoucements for steam box this year. I'm still skeptical of steam box especially when its using linux that would mean developers would have to make games that support it but I hear you can change OS. The game still has to be able to run on its hardware wihich we know nothing about.

Valve works on valve time, when its out its out.  Honeslty i have to wonder if the tech is really there. Plus there is the problem of development for the platform, since it was supposed to be using Linux.

I'm not really confident about the Steambox. I'm not sure if there's a viable market for it but I do wish Valve well because I do support Valve.

I thought the Steambox project was dead after Valve decided to drop collaboration on the "Piston" computer by the Xi3 Corporation. Xi3 is going to release the system on their own, without Valve affiliation.

They were never in collaboration. Xi3 just wanted some publicity and so lied about their 'console system' being a Steambox.

Interesting. I guess I was just basing what I knew on rumor.

I really don't think it is necessary for Valve to release a full system. If I were them, I would simply create my own controller, and a modified Linux distro to fully integrate the Steam interface. Release a list of minimum system specs for Steam Linux, so there is some standardization. Let people build or use whatever computers they want with this OS and controller. That's all they need to do.

I can understand them wanting to release a full console for this just for simplicity's sake, but they could still let people install the software on any computer that meets the specs. Knowing Valve's appreciation for flexible systems, and general consumer-friendlyness, I expect no less.

Really? They even openly talked about it in a video interview... what an f'in scam artist.

Damn.. they need to go to hell for lying and they didn't even hide it.  LOL   Xi3 go to hell.

It probably will release next year.

I'm interested to see how it go, but I can't see anything being better than a proper PC for gaming so I doubt I will buy it unless there's a good reason to do so. I do hope that Steambox will sell well because Valve deserve all good things, and it will be good for Linux. Given by Windows 8, the Windows OS is on its way out.

I really hope it is successful with its Linux gaming OS and OGL. The PS4 will also use OGL so hopefully this could help to kick things in the right direction, which suffice to say is the direction away from DirectX and more importantly, away from Microsoft.

Microsoft have neglected their PC platform since the XBOX as far as its Windows gaming users go, all in favor of tablet OS, childrens toys, a crap search engine and TV boxes. It would be nice to play games without having things like XBlive and Bing shoved in our faces. MS dont care about their customers, they care only bout the $$$$ and that will never change. The way MS are going now, it makes me cringe to imagine what they may have planned for later Windows OS's.
