Do you find them to be necessary?

depends, in public? never... Most people never use thier mics for any useful things in public, in private matches? quite often.

but CS(S) is a game where very little communication is needed really, the radio commands are fast and simnple, and couppled with the radar, it is very easy to get a good overview of the situation.

But I still use the mic in private machups, mainly to request people with specific weapons to help out if needed, and relaying the number of opponants closing in.

If I'm scrimming then yeah but in public games no one use mics. If your playing with a friend i would recommend using a third party voice program like ,steam, xfire, vent, teamspeak, etc so you don't piss people off(not meniton quality is better as just all around more useful then in ingame voip) which ironically is the one time people will whip out there mics to tell you to stfu! But in other valve games like l4d2,team fortress 2, and day of defeat source mics are far more prevalent in pubs.

Z X and C bring up the radio chat menus, each brings up a different set of chat commands.
