I just bought a Logitech MX518 and I really like it so far. The only problem is that my mouse pad is getting annoying. Do I really need to use a mousepad when I have a nice clean smooth surface? Is using a mouse on a smooth plywood desk bad?

If you have the room, get one of those desktop calendar things. They're surprisingly pretty cool as a mousepad.

I have a MX1000 and don't use a mouse pad. Ever since I was stupid enough to install Logitech's included Bluetooth junk drives that came with the Mx5000 instead of just using microsoft's bluetooth stuff, it acts up widely when I use a mousepad for some reason. So no, I use my nice and clean desktop surface.

Surfaces do actually affect how accurately an optical or laser mouse responds. Usually though the difference is too minimal to even notice so... just try it without your pad and see how it goes. If you like it then you're all good. I have a microsoft intellimouse optical. Use it for normal computer use and gaming. I opt to use a mouse pad because I like the traction it gives. Those friction free surfaces get on my nerves. As for that guys drivers messing with the use of a mousepad... no clue whats up with that.

I can't stand those smooth, plastic "gaming" mousepads. I use a logitech mx518 on a cloth pad with nice wrist-rest. I feel like the slight resistance of the cloth helps me move the mouse more accurately; it also doesn't make that annoying "scratching" sound you often hear a mouse make on a hard surface.

I use the Steelseries Icemat 2 with my Logitech MX Revolution.

Its great and i love it. It's a tempered glass mouse pad. It takes about a day or two of putting up with a slight scratchy sound until it wears out and smoothens the mouseskates, but after that its like your mouse is sliding on air.

In short, yes. This is because dark surfaces have some interaction with the opticals of the mouse. I forgot how exactly it works, but another thing is the texture of the mousepad. My Sharkoon "x-surface" is the best mousepad i've ever used. It works great bc it attaches to all surfaces well. Another thing about it is that the speed is perfect for my fps games.

It's mostly a matter of comfort these days and what you feel works for you. I'm used to the tactile experience of a mouse on a cloth-topped mousepad, to I have my LX3 on one that happens to have a gel wrist rest. I don't have to use it since it's an optical mouse and would be perfectly happy on the bare surface of my desk, but I like the setup I have.
