Well I'm only 17 so I can't comment on the age thing. I think, however, that it is due to the lack of time you spend gaming. You have much more important things to worry about, where as I really don't. After I finish up my exams I will be able to play for 5 hours a night. More on the weekends. I won't play that much obviously, I'll go outside maybe once a week :P But I will be s**t hot for a while. You really have to dedicate more time then it is worth to keep on top. Plus your an old fogey now :P You can't play with a cane

You can't do both. It's either real life or owning everybody. You have to choose.

Seriously, if you only play once in a while you won't be as good as those people that play a few hours a day.

LOL! Well said Sold Mario. The cane does get in the way!

What I usually try to do is learn one map very well and pwn on that one. But my reflexes seem to be getting slower. Back in the day I had a roller mouse ball (that I would use on a book) and a crappy system and I destroyed everyone. Now I can afford the best in PC hardware and I get nothing but a negative score but plenty of enjoyment as well.

I would hate to see myself at 50, but by then I might have the time to devote to some "pwnage!"

I think its just the fact that you have been busy with your career/personal life that gaming took a back seat for some time and well, you dont lose the talent, maybe a bit slower reflexes but form is temporary, class is permanent 8)

Practice/Play more if you can and maybe the fire/desire to pwn doesnt match the same desire you had when you were in your early 20s....As they say, you get wiser by age, not weaker.

Enjoy yourself and m sure u will pwn everyone in time

It doesn't matter as long as you enjoy it :P All the best equipment in the world won't help majorly, it is all to do with time. You obvioulsy have better things to do then play games all day. Playing one map is good though, it will help.

Hahaha nice thread man, good question

the AGE dosent matter even a little bit

Im a teenager who plays games all day. 3 months ago i was a pro at GunZ like getting 50 kills when the seoncd person had 30 but then a month later i was getting powned. Theres no reason behind it

When ur older you have alot more things on ur mind and ur much more occupied so i can see why its a little harder to concentrate and pown.

Its not age its lifesytle in my eyes

Well I would hold the opposite to be true.

When one is young one should not be obsessing with computer games, but instead with sex, drugs, and rock and roll.

Then once you're older and you can't have those things anymore (and you actually have money that's not Mommy and Daddy's to buy things) you can worry about gaming.

Additionally if you're under 17 you have no business buying mature games and making congress crack down on the rest of us because of you. I have no problem if you do anything and everything else illegal like sell narcotics, purloin 40oz bottles of malt liquor, whatever. But if you make me unable to buy what I want in my 30s I wish you cancer.

I became a decent player of Call of Duty a few years back (and I was about 37 then). Certainly not one of the great players, but I could put up a good fight and used to average a respectable 3:1 kill:death ratio on pub servers, sometimes more. Now I'm 40 and I'm nowhere near as good, but then I haven't played the game as much, so I haven't practiced as much. You need to keep playing a game regularly against good players to keep your reflexes sharp.

On the other hand, I do think your reflexes get dulled over time as you get older, and it's harder to compete with people half your age.

Its all about mind set man Shullian

That's a very good point, your mind-set can play a very important role in your performance if you're able to play a FPS decently with the mouse. If you can manage to get into a certain mind-set, then from my own experience your peripheral vision and tenacity can be enhanced on the battlefield.

Gaming is like most things in life. The more you do it and practice, the better you become.

You cant expect to jump into a CS clan match and own everyone when its your first go, anymore than you can expect to play a John Petrucci solo the first time you pick up a guitar, (although the latter you may never do)

Agreed, practice does make perfect in some cases, but what age does bring to the table is a bit more tried and true experience. At 18, I would be more accustomed to charging into a defended corridor, and get blown away. Now at 30, I play quite a bit smarter - I ambush, set up traps, use the area to my advantage, and my opponent's area to their disadvantage.

A more important question:

Will you be calling the baby:

1. Lara.

2. Alyx.

3. Alice.

4. Elexis (Sin fans, where are you?).

5. Oni?! It could happen.

6. Uhh..

7. Mona.

8. Joanna. (C'mon he might be a console guy).

9. I've run out of names.

i wouldn't worry about not keeping up - i'm not as good at something fastpaced like UT any more (though i only play SP), i just think it's once you get to a certain age - a combination of reflexes and also, maybe even just subconsciously, you're just not quite that bothered either

do what i am and get into RPG/FPS hybrids and stealth games instead - they're the future for old gits like us ;)

This is absolutely true i think about 80% of gamers out there are very similar techinque wise but mind-set they are different. From my personal experiences i would have radical changes in "skill". I am a very inconsistent player in all games including real life sports. I can get real good for a couple of days and then for a while suck so i quit the game. I come back 2 to 3 weeks later and play the same game and own again. I feel like everytime i play a game again about after a couple days i do A LOT better. But ofcourse if you absent yourself for more than a month or two from a game you will obviously see your skills drop. I think it totally is mind set that affects ur gaming abilities. When im stressed and sucked up in piles of work.. a good 2 to 4 hour gaming session always relieves it and I do real well in game too. PWNAGE!!

Normally, age does not have any significant impact in how good you play games, having in mind that you have played that game for many years. Mostly it depends on how many time you spend playing it. Because skills do not stay the same if you don't use them (obvious). So if you play a lot less than you did in the old days, it's no wonder that you get owned.

Time to switch to RPGs my friend. I am in my early 30's as well with three children and have never had the twitchy reflexes that FPS require. Plus I think it has more to do with with the amount of time you play. Guys like us don't have time to spend playing hours upon hours of CS. So if I do play a FPS it is usually single player or I play RPGs and the occaional MMORPG.

You can still be amazing at games... but it means you have to turn into that fat balding guy with glasses with the wrist brace on the World of Warcraft episode of South Park. Be that guy and you will pwn to the max.

Uber Pwner

Or, you could just enjoy what you have, such as your wife and soon-to-be kid, and just be a subpar FPS player. Or as someone else mentioned, you could try to stick to one specific map, or even one specific game. Get really good at it over a long period of time, and then you can pwn. Or, the other option would be to just play more single player, or RPGs, or co-op games.

Ya I love RPG's I was thinking about getting into AoC or WAR. Actually I found EVE online to be a great RPG to play ar your leisure. Maybe TF2 would be a good pick up FPS game?

Oh, biggest loser, the girls name is going to Roslyn (Roz-lin). No video game names, but if its a boy I seriously wanted to name him Han :)

I'm 40 now, married with 2 girls (7yrs & 18mos), and try to game when I can still, I usually end up playing Halo online with my older daughter. But when I do get to game on the other stuff, well it depends on how burnt out I am. If I'm feeling good, and in the right mind-set, I really can play well. If I am tired, or not in the mind-set, I get destroyed. I have found that playing certain games regularly helps, and others will actually "dull" my reflexes after a while, not sure why, I think it is the mind-set thing again.

But I think I will game till I'm at least 140 years old, though by then I guess I will have to get used to the VR systems instead.

It really is all about playing one game all the time. I used to play CSS pretty much by itself. Now I play TF2 aswell and I know if I play TF2 for a few days I really shouldn't expect to come back to CSS and be the top of the table (maybe second :P ). I won't be awful but I won't be at my best. However, if I play CSS for a whole day and it comes to a match in the evening, I will be on fire. The more you play one game the better at the game you become, simple as that.

Age shouldn't matter, if it doesn't distract you from your family duties, that is. I'm 21 and i constantly get owned by others half my age.

There might be a little to the age thing. I've saw a documentary on these professional Korean Starcraft players that can execute something like 500 commands a minute and they are constantly being pressured by the next up and coming younger player. Fatal1ty I think said that he also retired because he was getting older and he reflexes had declined. But those are the pros, for amatuers I think the most important thing is how often you play. You have some of these amatuer leagues/guilds (whatever you want to call them) that will play for 16 or more hours on the weekends to get ready for a tournament. That's more gametime than I get in an entire week.

Except for me, but like I said I still have fun :)

You guys are right, I definatly agree your mind set has to be in the right place. When I would play in college it would help if I had all my crap done for the day (errands, homework, cleaning up) and later that night play with a clear mind.

I guess I am looking for a FPS that is a really good pick-up-game. Something that I don't have to devote alot of time to, but it looks like with alot of things, practice makes you pwn!

Anybody remember playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein? I kill any fool that says he was better than me...notice I say 'was'.

I plan on gaming till I die! There may be a little to reflexes and age, but it's most likely due to playing for relaxation rather than to waste your time, like most younger players do! I'm 23, so I seem to be somewhere in the middle of the typical posters on this thread. Then again, fps has never been my thing...

I'm 20 and I'm AWFUL at CS:S... I still have the Halo mentality of just spraying the area with bullets... Although it makes me halfway decent at TF2.

Same thing here, dude. i just turned 35 and will game till I die. I get smacked down on just about any online game I try. Personally, I feel that some of those times, other gamers were employing cheats or they had a much better ping than me so I would be lagging getting "powned?" while they were already gunning me down as I spawned. I just play games alone now pretty much.

Sigh!

I also find myself playing games 'alone' as well. I am in love the total war series. But back in my 20's I woulndn't dream of playing a game soley for its singleplayer playability, it was all about multiplayer pwnage.

I guess its another sign of jerryatric PC gaming - playing games alone! :(

Not that i hate online gameing (i love it) but i miss the halo parties before halo 3 when everyone would come together and play and chat and actually do more than talk in a headset, They still happen but not as often. Maybe you guys should call up some buds and start a gameing party COD4 anyone?

I also find myself playing games 'alone' as well. I am in love the total war series. But back in my 20's I woulndn't dream of playing a game soley for its singleplayer playability, it was all about multiplayer pwnage.

I guess its another sign of jerryatric PC gaming - playing games alone! :(

Sigh!

Not that i hate online gameing (i love it) but i miss the halo parties before halo 3 when everyone would come together and play and chat and actually do more than talk in a headset, They still happen but not as often. Maybe you guys should call up some buds and start a gameing party COD4 anyone?

Where I used to live I could get together a gaming party no problem. But I have moved to a new area and have a new batch of friends but they just like talking about there boats, saving on electricity bills (snore) and working on our homes. Which is cool and all but I doubt any of them would be down for some LAN or 360 action.

Help me! I am in suburban hell now!

I just moved to, From gangs and goths, to preps and jocks (yes im just starting highschool) But noone here gets together to actaully do anything. I remeber talking with some guys at church and they where talking about holding a halo party, their idea of a party is to connect online with head sets..... The only thing close to a real party here is the little kiddies birthday parties... but honestly what can you do?

I been a PC gamer since.....well forever. I have noticed when I was younger (teens to early 20's) I would own anybody on any FPS game out there, online or local lan partys. I would pride myself on this. I am now in my 30's and have a career and a baby girl on the way but I still find time to play a little 2142 or CS but I get my ass handed to me. I still have fun though, but not as much as I would be if I was owning everybody ;)

I plan to dabble in gaming for the rest of my life but I hope I can keep up with the young-ins in the FPS department and perhaps "pwn" again?

Any thirty-somethings out there feel me?

I feel you; my reflexes and hands are not what they used to be. I was never very good and in recent years have retreated more and more into single player, but I dabble in it and still play well from time to time and on occasion get surprised by something I do, but there are more and more times when I'm in a match and get owned with such thoroughness that I just stop and stare for a few seconds, trying to figure out what just happened :D It's not just the reflexes though; we can't dedicate the time needed to be as good as some of these people who play so much. I feel I'm a smarter player than I used to be but that doesn't always help. But I still have fun too -- if nothing else I like to see where I stand against good players.

I don't think age matter too much. I know plenty of FPS gamers who are in their thirties or fourties and have families and don't get to play that often, but they still can own everybody because of how much experience they have.
