I'm just about to finish building my computer in a few days, but I was on Youtube just looking up Alienwares and it made me wonder if anyone plays games on their laptops? A good example would be Battlefield 3, Skyrim, like games that recently came out.

I do not, but I recently got to watch my friend play Skyrim on his Asus laptop. I think it was a G72/73 or something like that. I do know it had the 5870 mobile version. It ran beautifully. Almost all settings on max and you could easily tell it was at least 50fps 90% of the time.

I have a laptop that I use when I'm out and about for the weekends. Skyrim runs perfectly fine almost maxed out, although that's the only super recent AAA title that I've played on it. Most other games are indie titles off of Steam, or some older games that I really enjoyed.

The alienware m17x can hold a gtx580m which can handle many high demanding games, then theres the m18 which is a portable desktop that can can hold two gpus. I game on my m17 with gtx580m, pretty much maxing all settings without a care. But there's a price to pay, literally, and it's pretty significant.

Why the question?

Unfortunately. Dual partitioned my MacBook Pro with Win7, but my choices are relatively limited by my specs. I usually play older games, or more recent games such as TF2 on lower settings.

Good lord, how hot does that M17 get? A GTX 580M has to get like...scorching. I would love to game on a laptop all the time, because the portaibility is nice, but having a 22 inch screen in 1080p and 2 GPUs without having to spend over $1300 is nice to me. The big thing for me is the size of them, a large laptop can get uncomfortable, while they are nice to use.

If you spent the same amount of money a laptop cost on a desktop, you'd get a more powerful PC and one that runs cooler. You don't need mobility to game, laptops are for school and work. Come on, you aren't going to be playing Skyrim inside a McDonalds, or sitting on a park bench.:lol:

About 75-80.Some have it around 72ish with thermal repaste(since they doubt dell's) and prop up the back for better ventilation..or add a laptop cooler.

Unless you frequently take flights across continent...some people need the mobility.

I'm still using the lap top I bought when I got into pc gaming back in 2010. So far the only game it can't play is battlefield 3 but every other game runs great. Even skyrim which has to be on medium settings runs great. Desk tops are better since they can be upgraded and do more but I do like the idea of being able to pc game is I go to a friends house, on vacation, at school, or traveling.

Oh man, I couldn't handle that haha. I'm a serious kind of guy when it comes to temps. I just added my second 6850 and I honestly hate that they get even in the 50's even though I know they can easily handle being in the 70's regularly.

That's pretty impressive - cooler than my top GPU anyway.

I do, but it's an Asus. Laptop gaming is a little more expensive than desktop gaming, but it comes at greater convenience. LAN parties are easy, you can easily take it to any TV and play via HDMI, and you can take your computer with you wherever you go.

I have a Thinkpad T420 with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 4200M. Older games are fine, but newer games do struggle somewhat.

I do, but that is because I needed my laptop for college as well. It is better in the long run to invest into a desktop if you want to play PC games.

Just got a new ASUS gaming laptop and it is my main gaming machine. I have a desktop which is showing it age, but I'm one of those strange people who prefer to game in different environments. I move around my house, take it to different places and game. I play a lot of single player games so the need for a excellent Internet connection is not needed often. I love gaming on a laptop, just for all the versatility it provides me.

I had a laptop in my first year of university. But the overheating problem and a rather sub-par performance for the majority games I was playing at the end of my first year caused me to decide to sell it and build a desktop instead. I purchased a netbook instead for note taking and portability. At university, I use my faculty's computer lab computers to get work done.

It's not work, just a foreign student who games. I don't even game outside my room with AW, a very conspicuous branded stuff. An elderly friend suggested I pop open an AW in a coffee shop somewhere to get some woahs - crazy, something I want to never do - attracts unwanted attention.

Yes, only computer I own is my laptop. I have an ASUS G7JW... something. Shows how techie I am, forgot the model of my damn machine. It's something like that though. I run Skyrim on high and have no slowdown, but sometimes in empty corridors my framerate shoots up and is super smooth.

I also found out that playing Mass Effect on PC is in every conceivable way superior on the PC than console. Hated the game on console. Loved it on my laptop.

Mass effect is how I got into pc gaming. I didn't hate the xbox version of the game just found it to play wierd and not the most fun. On the bioware social forums back in 2010 people were talking about how mass effect and dragon age played so much better on pc. So I got mass effect on steam and loved it. After that I bought Dragon Age since I hated the controls on ps3 and had way more fun playing that on pc too. Then I started to re buy all the multi plat console games I owned on pc and began buying new games on pc as well. Haven't looked back since.

I do.

I play indie games, lots of older games off of GOG (love Empire Earth), League of Legends and some less demanding multiplats (mostly valve games).

Will probably get a better laptop this year so I can play Witcher 2 at a higher setting.

Other than that there aren't really any demanding PC games I care to play.

If you travel around with your laptop a lot and have actual oppotunities to game on it, then I'd see the point of having a gaming laptop. I have a couple of buddies though with these expensive gaming laptops and the things NEVER leave their desk at home. Whats the point?

I see that being a good reason to have a gaming laptop if you travel, but if you don't then it's better off having a desktop instead. I mean I have a laptop which is for school work and programming on my free time, and hopefully by tomorrow I'll have my desktop finally built for gaming purposes.

I bought an alienware m15x and its great for lan style gaming and when I just want to sit in my lazyboy playing mmos. It also can play anything fine including battlefield 3. Only thing I regret was going amd, so many driver issues this year on both my desktp and laptop. I traded my 5850 on my desktop for a 460 1 gig, havent had any driver issues there anymore. Wish I could do the same with my 5850m.

I do. I actually own both a gaming desktop and gaming laptop. I have an ASUS G72SX with a GTX 260m and it runs everything on high settings. I use it on the road for work and for those periods of time when I am not inspecting anything, I wanted something to keep me occupied besides watching just movies. Most of my Silent Hunter III campaign has been played while on the road.

My laptop's tech is a little too dated to play any hardware demanding games well, but I have a good desktop to do that for me. I generally use my laptop to play games that are not demanding, but still fun to play. Then I play those games when I am not at home for an extended period of time.

Yes I do play games on my laptop that support Alienware hardware, and it made the game playing more realistic and entertaining for me. Games like dark Void and battlefield 3 becomes more interesting and realistic while playing on Alienware laptop. ___________________________________

I guess you can lift it up and shake it around when there's an explosion next to you...
