I just got my first "real" job out of college and i'm holdin down some decent bucks to finance a dell XPS system. However i am concerened that they aren't all they are cracked up to be, i was worried that it might not be the godlike system that it seems. The one i was looking at was a quad core cpu, 4 gigs of ram, 8800gts card and a blu ray drive. It also comes with a 22 inch monitor. So as much as reading those specs makes me salivate, i've seen people on the boards with similar set ups complaining that they can't even run crysis at very high and bench above 40 fps. So i was concerend that even with this monster set up that it still couldn't perform. maybe its just that Crysis doesn't have a well optimized engine, but then i see that people run COD4 with over 100 fps. And they said that Far Cry 2 which looks way more crazy than crysis was running off a dual core with a 8800 gtx. So would i be wasting my money?
Or should i wait a year and see if tech catches up?
Anyone thats bought a XPS system from dell around 1900-2500 bucks please let me know if you are satisfied or if you felt that it should have been a better system. My future depends on it lol

I'd say that system sounds ok, all except the 8800 GTS. GTS is a waste at this point since the GT is cheaper and faster. Don't get blinded by Crysis either, it's actually a boring game to play and performs badly. In my system I have 2x Geforce 8800 GTX and can only just run Very High at 1024x768 at playable frames, but every other game I play runs maxed out (including x16 ansiotropic texturing and x8 anti-aliasing)with 60+ fps.

If you have the option of changing the GPU then change it to 8800GT or GTX, check bench marks on www.guru3d.com to see what I mean when I say the GTS is a waste of time.

Other than that you should enjoy that bit of kit.

Have fun

Build your one rig.

For around $2000-2500, you will be able to build a killer custom PC.

If you need any help, PM me or visit the Custom Built PC Union (click sig).

Nosmo-it could be the new GTS which is faster than the GT and GTX.

OP-I would build it yourself to be honest, it gives you much more flexibility and upgradability than Dell do. They put in the cheapest parts which will run you CPU, GPU and HDD. You get a cheap, tacky PSU and motherboard with Dell, whereas if you build your own you can make sure they are up to scratch.

if you do get it pre built, dont go with dell. I suggest Gateways line of gaming computers, theyre cheaper and perform nicely.

if you have ALOT of time to spare then go for a build, but if not then just go for Dell..
