I tried the modern Sam & Max. It wasn't funny.

I suggest the Monkey Island games (starting with the first), Full Throttle, and Grim Fandango. There are other great games as well, but those are the absolute best.

Edit: Oh, I would always consult walkthroughs when you get stuck for a moderate period of time. Allowing that other people may play and enjoy adventure games differently, I personally find no enjoyment in frustration. :P

I play a lot of these game every years (totally addicted heh). Sam and max is a good suggestion for beginner, easy to understand/play and pretty funny. If you want something more adult, you can look at The experiment, dracula origin, the Sherlock Holmes game made by frogware (not the mummy one though), Culpa Innata (excellent story, but ugly graphic), Syberia 1 and 2 (classic) and, well, if you need more ask again, but that should give you a great amount of fun ;)

Monkey Island for sure!
And Grim Fandango is really good!

And don't forget about The Day of the Tentacle.

Simon the Sorcerer also comes to mind!

I was looking at the screenshots for Monkey Island and it reminds me a lot of Zelda: Wind Waker because of the artwork. A modern day Monkey Island game would be awesome.

Little Big Adventure (aka Relentless) and Twinsen's Odyssey. Hard to find but worth every penny...

My favorites:

Grim Fandango

The Longest Journey (NOT dreamfall)

They are both old, but still worth playing today
