I have it. It's okay. It's definitely not as great as it was hyped to be. To be honest it's a bit too dorky and kiddy for me... but I play it a bit now and then nonetheless.

Yes. You have to be able to create your own creature to play the game. Just a warning... the first four stages (cell, creature, tribal and civilization) go by really quickly. I got to the space stage in the first day. But the space stage is where the meat of the game is anyway.

im still in the creature stage :( i can't kill anything or charm anyone because i dont have the skills. i've extinct like... two species and befriended one.

Do you have any pack slots, so you can add creatures to your party? Once you have 2 or 3 other creatures roaming with you, it gets fairly simple.
It's a lot more difficult than you'd expect, given the kind of game it is. I like creating things, and that's what ate most of my time. The Space stage, while kinda fun, got too frustrating for me with all the 'OMG COME SAVE US' every time i tried to do something interesting.
The easiest way to get through the creature phase if you dont have alot of DNA points. Find a race with a crap ton of hitpoints and go up to there baby versions and befriend them. After you become friends have one of them follow you and bam they kill everything for you.
