I'll admit I'm not to knowledgable on this but considering that my old hdd would click plenty of times and I had to do more than a few formats maybe you should just send it back. my new sata HDD isn't clicking so your shouldn't, but again I'll admit I'm operating on a hypothesis here.

Light clicks and little "rattle" sounds are normal for any large hard drive. You'll notice a fair amount of noise on a 500GB+ HDD.

However, if you hear squeaking, loud clangs, or other odd noises, then it's probably bad. But it's important to note that by the time the head is bouncing around making a ruckus, the drive has already torn itself apart.

back up important data on ure PC TC. i was reading a horror story in a letter to a mag called PC format (uk mag). basically the writer asked the mag how to get her data off the HDD. she explained that the HDD made a clicking noise for a shile, but she pluged it out and pluged it back in. the HDD then functioned for a month or so before the clicking returned and she could no longer get into windows. she asked how she could backup her data and the response involved alot of abuse and pointing from the mag.

my moms laptop also started clicking but she never got the chance to back up. the HDD just suddenly died with no warning.

so i definately recommend backing up all important data. the HDD might work for a while or it might go in a few moments, either way a clicking HDD is a very bad thing. if i was in ure shoes, i would be looking into sending the drive back if its under warranty or getting a replacement.

Funny. People here think it's failing.

I've seen about 40 hard drives, and they all make faint clicking sounds. The hard drive in my PS3 makes clicking sounds. When you're dealing with something spinning at 7200RPM, there's GOING to be noise. It's unavoidable.

Well since that last post my HDD did alot of clicking then I was forced to shut it down. Right after I turned it back on and It was taking forever to get into Vista. I went to eat dinner and came back and it has been working fine and only clicked once during start up. During the time I was posting this it made a few clicks.

Just so you know this is a 400GB hard drive and I dont have to worry about backing anything up on this HDD it's rather new and all it has is driver info, AIM, FireFox, and 2 games. It's a new samsung drive I got after my western digital one (also 400GB) failed on me. That one based on comments on newegg had a high failure rate.

If its making you nervous and its under warranty might as well get it replaced. If the sound isnt to big a a deal i wouldnt worry about for now but be sure to back everything important up as you should anyway.

There's a difference between a hard drive just working and clicking sounds, maybe we misunderstood the OP, but i've had 2 HDD fail after i heard "clicking" sounds.

My hdd had clicking sounds before it almost went completely bad, but running chckdsk repaired the drive untill later it started clicking on me, then it froze. After I reset it it was still clicking and was taking long to boot Vista so I turned it off ate dinner and the clicking is gone.

So yea, it been a rollercoaster ride.
