The only game I ever bought based on hype rather than researching properly was BioShock, and it was bitter disappointment.
Generally, no. Hype - or hyperbole (which means exaggeration) is something that people with sense avoid. I certainly do. I go into most games with very low expectations usually, and that's a good thing. I spent over a year thinking Crysis was going to be mediocre, and when I actually played it, I was blown away.
No.
Never believe anything sales people or marketers say, because they are just trying to push product. Make up your own mind.
Marketing, fanboy-praises and ads are part of this so-called hype. Whether people like it or not their attention is attracted to those specific games. So hype pretty much works. The effects of hype can be negative or positive, but I think we're all affected by it. So, yes, I'm more attracted to hyped games than games I've heard almost nothing about, but that does not mean that I think more hype = higher quality of the game. I do admit that Portal-hype made me play that game and I don't regret it for a minute. I can say the same about Half Life, only I hated it.
This is not really fair question. That's like asking an individual person does advertisement's work. Most people will say no. However, subconsciously if it gets seen enough your purchasing decisions will determine your decision.
hype use to attract me more to agame when i was a kid, but then disappointments happen like rome total war, halo 2, doom 3, oblivion in relatively quick succession and eventually you just stop giving a dam about hype give up being a fanboy etc and just track what might interest you.
No one wants to admit to buying games because of hype. I am pretty sure we all or at least many of us like to go to sleep at night and say we think for ourselves.
Have I bought a game because of hype? Of course I would say no. Don't want to look like some ignorant person who just goes out and buys something because its popular or "cool". What you call a trend... well I can't say that word but I'll assume anyways that you've heard the saying. But I would be foolish to say hype has nothing to do with what I buy. After all if hype makes me aware of a game that before I knew nothing about, and because of this I research it or play a demo, then hype would deserve some of the credit for me buying the game. After all if I never knew the game existed how would I ever know to try it. There is probably many games I never tried simply because I wasn't aware of them.
I never heard of guitar hero until all the hype came out about it around the time guitar hero 2 hit the shelves. THats probably a bad example cause I hate guitar hero, but hopefully ,just maybe you get what I am saying.
Hype can be both positive and negative. Positive side people know the game exists, they've heard of it. Many games may deserve their hype simply because they were good to begin with. So hype is not all bad. The negative side is obvious if theres too much people get their expectations unreasonably high.
I noticed a lot of people here said they don't give in to hype... yet have tried or even bought the games that were hyped... Even if you were dissapointed it doesn't really matter, the point of hyping a game up is to get you to try/buy it...
I'm sure we would all like to think we're immune to the ads and hype but we're not... You can't decide to not pay attention to hype, its kind of contradictory.

yes, theres' marketing hype and there's, as you put it, fanboy hype.
Half Life is a very good example - i reckon about 50% of the posts on here mention it - sorry but no game is that good - i am someone who gets turned off by this much adulation, partly because if you apply it to other genres, it always ends up with turkeys - take a look at film - Citizen Kane to lots of people is the best film ever - to me it's no different to any other black and white B-movie you get on UK terrestrial TV on a wet weekday afternoon
I've said it before but after about 20 -30 mins of Half life i gave it up - and it is VERY rare for me to give anything up that early
the few who actually DON'T think it's the best game ever etc etc give exactly the reasons i would - and they've played it all the way through, which tells me that no matter how many peopl on here go on about it, it's still cr*p as far as i'm concerned
phew - that's better...:D

That's okay, if you don't like Half-Life, you can join the 50% who haven't evolved yet.
