When you start the game i think you just need to browse for the saved game.

When you finish ME 1 it creates an "End Game" save file. You can then import this save to ME 2 by using the configuration utility (click Configure on the ME 2 launcher, then Save Games, then Copy Mass Effect 1 Saves - it will only copy End Game saves). When you launch ME 2 you will have an option to start a new game by importing ME 1 character data. Most choices just carry over as minor cameos - some carry over into actual content differences (Wrex, The Council, Class, etc). You also get a bonus for importing an ME 1 character.

So is it really worth it for me to play ME 1 seeing how i could just get it on the PS3 and get the short version on the first game as well as play ME 2?

That would be like watching The Godfather 2 after someone explains part 1 to you for 5 minutes.

You can do it, but it will not be the full experience.

lol what a great analogy. So do the saves have any huge impact on my experince or could i play ME1 on PC and ME2 on PS3 and get the same experince or do you think i would just be better off playing ME2 on PC as well with my save? I am very curious how much of the story is impacted based on my choices in ME1

Honestly, I would just play 1 and 2 on your PC.

The impact of your game save may or may not seem like that big of a deal to you when you are done playing both games (only you will be able to judge that) but ME1 and ME2 are so epic that they deserve to be played to the fullest, which means playing both games on the same platform.

Since both games on steam cost $15 i am thinking of picking up those and then if like the series maybe picking up ME2 on PS3 and doing a second play through since the game if i am not mistaken has multiple endings or multiple ways of getting to the end. I am correct or thinking of anotehr game?

Gamersgate.com has both games for $7.98 (each).

Get 'em both for $15, bro.

Steam already had them on sale during their Holiday Blitz I think, thus I doubt they will be going back on sale anytime soon (though you never know with Steam). Some decisions have big impacts on gameplay (completely changing NPC's you interact with), some have little nostalgic impacts (you get emails from certain people) and dialogue changes (mainly with Tali, but a slight change with either Kaiden or Ashley on Horizon). We don't know for sure which changes, if any, will have much impact on the 3rd game right now - it is thought that even little ones will add up to bigger things in the last game of the trilogy (eg - the Rachni queen decision, the choice about an Asari on Virmire, the Wrex decision, the choices regarding Tali, the choice on the final ME 2 mission, etc).

Definitely play them all in the same place, for the sake of Mass Effect 3. The choices you make and their impact will be largely felt in the third game, and I'm sure you will want to replay all the games to see the multiple endings and changes that occur depending on what you do in earlier games.

the choices you make on ME1 has a lot of impact on ME2. like if an NPC dies at ME1, obviously you won't see them in ME2. and the character levelling system is different so you wont get an overpowered character if you import a hi-level ME1 character. you will only get a bonus. in my case, i imported a lvl 50 ME1 character. the bonus i got was my ME2 character starting at lvl3. and if your ME1 character is rich (like a millionaire or something), you will get bonus credits at the beginning too.
