I heard there are issue hooking the pc up to the tv. For instance, I heard that even if I hook it up to my 1080p 3dtv, its wont look sharp as it should. Why? Is this true?

I want to set up a temporary rig until 720 comes out. Will the pc hook up to my tv as work just as good a a console would? I dont want issues. Thanks

I've tried it too, and it definitely looks funny on my t.v.'s default settings. I tinkered with the setting on my t.v. quite a bit and made it a little bit better, but it still isn't quite as high-quality as my monitor.

that sucks. This is a deal killer for me. My plasma is the second best reviewed tv of all time, and leds do not come close to it. Especially some puny monitor. So basically there is no chance of me pc gaming on it? Why do pcs not play well? It doesn't make sense, what is causing this? Why does a console look fine but a pc fcks up the picture? I mean wth... and here I ready to get a rig for the first time.

I haven't found this to be the case at all. I have a Panasonic VT25 50-inch 3d plasma, which has a hell of a picture. I use a 23-inch 1080p LCD monitor as well. When I use my TV as a monitor, it looks just fine. Nothing looks "funny." In fact, the colors really pop and the picture is quite sharp. The only issue is that a 50-inch screen at 1920x1080 resolution doesn't have nearly the pixel density of a 23-inch screen with the same resolution. So while the plasma has much better colors and viewing angles that my monitor, it doesn't look as sharp when sitting close to it.

So you've been playing TF2 for weeks now enough to heavily criticize the community, yet you're considering a gaming PC for the first time? I suspect some of these responses will be used in another one of your idiotic anti-PC threads.

PC connected to a large TV will look just as good (or rather; better) than a console. The problem with large TVs is that they have a much lower pixel density than the average sized monitor, making the picture look less sharp. This isn't an issue specific to PCs.

Pixel density doesn't matter, as long as you sit the appropraite distance. A 50" 1080p tv has the same sharpness as a 20" 1080p monitor as long as you sit the recommended distance from them.

Okay good. But the problem is people not sitting the correct distance away from the tv. 1080p is 1080p, you just have to sit further back form a 50" than you would a 20". As long as you do, you don't lose any of the sharpness, and gain a much more cinematic feel thanks to the much bigger screen.

So If I hook a pc up to my st50 and run it at 1080p, it will be a lot sharper than my 360 games?

Personally, I prefer using my 40" 1080p HDTV for PC games over my 23" 1080p monitor. The bigger screen makes my games feel more immersive, and I can sit back and relax while I'm playing. And I have more adjustment options than just contrast and brightness, so the image quality is better using my 40" HDTV as well...

Because I am a PC gamer, I like to sit pretty close to the screen. I also don't have a good setup in my room to use mouse+keyboard with my TV. TBH, I think my TV is too big for the room that it's in. I don't know if I could sit the "recommended distance" from it.

Do you sit further back? Do you find that clarity equal? I have a 55" plasma that has native contrast way higher than any crappy led monitor

Well if you can't sit further back, then of course a tv would be terrible. I don't like being so close so its perfect for me. Huge 55" with the same clarity as a small monitor + way betetr native contrast (black level) + more immersive

Yeah, it is nice to play on the Panny with the lights off and the volume up. Back to my original point though- No issues with PC+TV for me.

Thank you. So the problems are people not sitting further from their tv screens... I am so excited to have a rig

I don't sit back very far at all. In fact, I had the HDTV on my desk for quite a while, and all that I did was lean back in my desk chair. I love keeping the screen big.. And the clarity is the same (1080p), the pixels are just bigger. This is why I leaned back a bit. But it felt like I was like playing in a movie theater or on a huge projector screen when I sat close to the HDTV. If you like gaming on projectors or big screens, then I would recommend using your plasma over a monitor. That would be my personal preference anyway...

That is true on the 'fuzzy' part and tv. After hooking up with the pc and tv, everything console game out there looks fuzzy to me. Ex. Dirt 2/3 blow chunks out of Forza series.

it will work fine games will look better than consoles the UI on windows doesn't play nice with a TV that big, it will be hard to see. Windows 8 would be better for you.

Here is my experience.. I connected my pc to my tv using hdmi, i plugged the hdmi into a random hdmi slot on my tv, It looked so bad, the text had weird pinkish purple pixels. my background was grainy. Then i tried running the witcher 2. At first it was ok but it animation input lag, Then suddenly the colors would go all weird. For example brown would look orange, blue would look purple. (This is with a 32" Sony full HD 1080p 200hz 3dtv). So i examined the back of my tv abit more and i saw a special kind of hdmi, It was HDMI/PC and it only had one on my tv and 4 other normal HDMI. So i plugged the HDMI cable into the HDMI/PC and it look so amazing! like the color, brightness and sharpness was so much better than my samsung 22" syncMaster 2333 monitor. Also the fluidity of the games were much better also. I don't know if it would look good to others or it only look better to me because my first experience was terrible!!!!

With Windows 7 or earlier you have to increase the DPI scaling so you can read a lot of the Windows UI text. However, many games don't handle that very well, so you have to set the properties of their .exe files to switch off DPI scaling when you run them.

The main downside to using a TV is that I find RTS or simulations harder to use - the information about specific units (or whatever) is often very difficult to read at a distance.

Exactly. It's called image retention. All the major tv models I've seen have it.

I have my PC hooked up to both my 24" LED monitor and my 46" LCD HDTV (for games I want to play from my couch with a controller) and at the bigger distance I'm sitting when gaming on the HDTV, I can't really tell the difference. Up close it doesn't look as sharp as on my monitor but again, at a greater distance, all my games look great.

I use a 24" 1080p TV as a PC monitor. I hook up my PC sometimes to a 39" 1080p TV in the family room. I even used a 32" 720p TV before that. Looked okay to me.

720p:

You won't know until you try it with your TV. You must have a computer if you're posting here. Try that first and see.
