Does Vista really use up this much RAM?

I just found this CPU meter on the Vista sidebar (Way late to the party, never tried messing with it before).. Anyway supposedly it shows CPU and Random Access Memory usage.. I have 4gb of RAM and according to this meter, just staring at it uses 39-40% of my RAM?

Well I guess it depends... I exited from steam, my antivirus, and a couple other things that were on my taskbar and got it down to 34%, still seems like a lot though..

Vista has a feature called "Superfetch" that keeps applications pre-loaded in memory, so that they load quicker when you want to use them or when they're accessed by some other program (like an antivirus app). The memory *should* be freed if applications actually need to use it. You can also turn it off if you want, if you go to the Services configuration.

It's fine vista will free it when your computer needs it. It stores all your most used programs onto your ram for quick access.

swtich the windows basic style/theme which turns off Aero and you will get a bit more free. you can also turn off Desktop Window Manager or dwm.exe following these steps http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/what-is-dwmexe-and-why-is-it-running/.

Yes it can. I find 1.5GB mostly it uses.
