StarCraft (notice that while everyone calls it Starcraft, the name refers to both Starcraft and its expansion, Brood War) is the game that had the biggest impact on the gaming scene, second only to WoW and the Nintendo games back in the NES days, and the only RTS to have managed to create 3 completely different yet flawlessly balanced playable races mixing both lightning fast reflexes and strategy in its gameplay.
Being an extremely players versus player focused game it quickly rose in popularity among gamers all over the world, to the point of creating whole gaming pro-leagues dedicated to it and becoming a national sport in South Korea.
It also featured an easy to use map editor that spawned numberless amounts of games which added to its replayability indefinitely, some of which still live on today as their own genres (Tower Defense and DotA are the most known).
That said, it's also one of the most hated games (should we call it a franchise now?) because people with short sight disputes its originality and innovation as if they have any relevance to its quality.
Yeah, not knowing it is...pretty overkill.
