Without your consent? My grandpa just bought a new 19" TV from Finlux. What, you never heard of Finlux? Neither have I. Nearly spat out my drink when he told me he paid $500 and thought it was an amazing deal.

You see, back in 1972 (40 years ago to this day) he was one of the first in our town (in norway) to buy a colour TV, it cost him 2 months pay, now he got a similiar sized colour TV for 2 days a days pay.

/facepalm.

As he told me about his purchase and I saw a Philips 32" backlit LED for $300. tsk tsk. Thankfully that was just his bedroom TV, he plans to upgrade his 28" CRT in the living room, not allowed to do so without my cosent!

Also started helping a friend buying speakers and etc, helped him buy a proper pair of DALI floor standing speakers with a Yamaha amp for next to notihng instead of a cheap ass HTiB, was going to help with the TV but he went out and bought some lame old 40" samsung for $700.

Not anywhere near as bad as asking for help picking out something, then buying something completely different. Why the f*ck did you even ask me about it then!?

Yeah I hate that too! That's kind of what my friend did... always asks me to help find him stuff and only half the time does as he's told :p

Yeah, that bugs me too. What's even worse is when they buy something like that without asking you about it, and as soon as they get it they're on the phone asking you to come over and "make it work".

I hate it because it shows how LAZY they are! I'm not quite yet an audio/video enthusiast, but I at least do tons of research before I drop large amounts of money on anything.

Ya. My ex used to call me about his computer buying endeavors and nothing I said seemed to sink in. I finally had to compare it to car parts. Then he finally got it.

I see no problem here. Gramps bought a good quality TV for a great price. He wasn't a dullard like some people on this forum who think you need to by brand name only or spend $1000 on some 2.1 speakers.

I bet I could've picked out a better TV for his money :) And $1000 isn't too much for 2.1 .. plenty of people spend 10 times more

Wow, this came to me as I was driving home from work today. All the time. I was pretty tech-savvy in high-school. And when it came time to my dad purchasing the first DVD player for our family, he didn't consent anyone including myself and came back home with a KLH branded DVD player. That thing lasted ~1.5 years before it stopped taking DVD's.

Yeah. My mom bought the 64 GB ipad and she had no reason at all to buy it instead of the 16 GB version. I'm pretty sure she only has like 10 GB of stuff on there and she's had it almost a year now. Could've saved $200 if she just asked me which to get.

Haha yeah I know that feeling. It just hurts to see relatives waste their money on bad electronics.

My father also has a really old flatscreen HDTV. That thing's picture is really bad and it doesn't even have a HDMI port.

One day I'll just buy him a new one.

He actually may have a use for it, he has a blu ray player and not all blu rays can be played since the TV only goes up to 720P / no 24hz support. He's also looking to buy a video camera with HDMI.

lol, I know exactly what you mean.. I taught most to look for reviews online, but some are still too stubborn to ask for help or do any research. Others still want my help regardless, which gets old to be honest, but I would rather that than for them to end up with garbage...

JigglyWiggly_
Well why not?? Multiple reasons: A) I am not indifferent. I generally care about what other people buy, I want to make sure they're getting what is right for them and at a good price. B) I always encourage people to buy things I'm interested in.. TVs/speakers/amps/projectors/cars etc.. if some one is considering a new ___ I'll advice them too! C) Since they are close family/friends means that I'll be visting them E.g. spending a weekend over at a friends house every now and then or in the case with my grandfather, living with him for a couple of weeks.. So what he buys is what I'll be using while I stay over. Same applies to christmas dinners and so on..

stressing over what someone buys is a bad idea they might end up feeling like they're doing you a favor for listening, etc i'll always give my advice, but i definitely won't stress what someone should buy.

My parents don't only ask my advice when buying electronics- they will ask me to go out and buy it. So I don't really have that problem.

Its not that I stress... its not like I go around all buthurt or tell them to return it lol :p My the worst case I can think of is my grand dad buying a 19" no name LCD for our summer house.. He spent like $500 on it.. thinking he'd made the best deal ever because he got a TV that was in HD! you could find a 40" Philips LCD for that kind of money.. ^^ Oh well.

Where did you get that from? Of course the world doesn't revolve around me. I have a natural desire for people around me to have what's best for them. I am not indifferent, like everyone else seems to be. "Hey randomguy, should I spend my money on an Aston Martin?" Randomguy: "uhhh, I don't give a sh1t because its not me getting the aston martin, fvck off". ME ME MEME ME ME. me: "yes indeed, your 7 year old Camaro is a little rusty. The Aston Martin is a great car, you'll enjoy it!" - even if I'd never get drive or sit in it, I'd genuinely wish that person to have a great driving experience, and spend my time helping him/her get the car they desire.

I didn't say it was uncommon, but I can say it's pathetic.

Your one of many who need to rely on mommy, daddy, and the others around you. Hand holding through everyday life and you will never grow or learn.

Jake, you're an idiot. Telling some 19 year old kid he will never grow or learn shows your trollish immaturity that frequently pops up from time to time. Sign of the economic times. Let me guess, a college kid who lives with his parents because it saves everybody money is pathetic too? How about somebody who lost their job, can't find one that suits the needs of living, moves back in with the parents for a period of time in recovery. (common trend these days as families huddle to help one another)

Too many factors to give such a non-educated statement... it's about as bogus as your scientifically incorrect spiels about some pair of Logitechs being as good as a dedicated hi-fi setup costing much more.

As far as the topic on hand, I love electronics plain and simple. I know if family or friends are looking for something, I'll give an opinion or typically they ask me. I won't go out of my way to say "Hey! You need to buy this", but I will say why it's better. All within the constraining factors of how much do they have to spend, what kind of space is there, how much are you going to use it? List goes on.
