I'm thinking of purchasing Doom 3, which is $9.99 at my local game store, but is this game any good? Is it scary/atmospheric/fun? Are the graphics dated?
It's really good. Also you don't need a super powerful system to play it and have fun. The atmosphere is good and the story is decent. You might want to check Ebay to see if you can buy a bundle with the expansion.
I just started to play it again and I would recommend it. Visually it is still impressive because it is a game that was designed to push the limits of computers back in the day. Although a good PC by today's standards runs it with ease it is defiantly a graphical benchmark in gaming that you should experience.

I agree. The game is very atmospheric, and the graphics arn't outdated. They're still pretty good. It isn't as fast as many other FPS, such as Half-Life or the original doom, but it's still an enjoyable game IMO. Plus, it's above average length for a FPS. Interesting story too, IMO.
For this kind of price it's pretty much worth it. It loses its scariness at about the seventh or eigth level, but the action is really visceral which makes it pretty exciting.
