They're both AAA games in my eyes (say what you want about Doom...) but you have to go for BioShock. When you get another $30, buy Doom.

get doom 3, bioshock has zero replay value, not even mods.

hard question. Doom 3 can be very tense and it actually manages to get more tense later on. Bioshock is rarely scary, but it's more like a sandbox game where you can use a variety of skills to take down foes.

Well, the atmosphere and storytelling, let alone the artwork in BioShock are far superior, but the action in Doom 3 is better. So it all comes down to what influences your experience more - just sheer action, or atmosphere and story.

I'd say they're both very worthy playing, so just buy one now and when you have anotehr $30 lying around, go for the other.

They both have demos, so you can try them out if you haven't yet.

i didnt like doom 3, the game graphics may be nice the envourment is cool but the gameplay is boring, always the same thing, repeating itself and lots of other annoying things, bioshock is more fun to play imo u can get skills and got more interactive items, tho i wouldnt say bioshock is a great game as well its descent.

i'd say get bioshock. they're both quite a bit flawed, but bioshock's less annoying.

Bioshock: one of the best games of last year. Intense, a great story, beautiful written and equally good art direction.

Doesn't that expansion try to rip-off the gravity gun from HL2? lol.

If you can get it, System Shock 2 is better than either of those games.

Doom 3's Grabber works different. First, you can hold an object for only a few seconds, then it spits it out at high speed. Second, you can catch fireballs with it - which leads to some very fun combat.

Third, it was actually a tool used during Doom 3's developement. Instead of building destroyed rooms, the id team built pristine rooms and then used this tool to swing crap around until it looked like a mess. I can't see how an engine feature rips-off a gun in another game. Perhaps if didn't look like a weapon, but like a demonic arm or something (I'm thinking at Trespasser here...) people wouldn't say Doom 3 has stolen HL2's gravity gun.

And fourth, RoE's developement started while Doom 3 wasn't even finished. Nerve Software is across the street from id and they were working at both games simultaneously.

I know all the veterans on this forum abhor Bioshock for being a dumbed down version of System Shock 2, but I think the average gamer would really enjoy the game. I say go for Bioshock if your computer can handle it. Be warned that the gameplay in Bioshock is mediocre, but the atmosphere is stellar.

Doom 3 easily. If you hate the game that is ok because you have a quake and doom conversion mod among other ones. So plenty of bang for buck and quality games.

Whoa, what Quake conversion?

It transforms it in a Quake 1 clone?!

The Hell and the archeological site looked a lot like the original Quake, and they were the best parts of the game IMO.

Both are great games as people are saying (assuming you like FPS). I would say some major differences are:

  • Bioshock has many more off-the-wall weird aspects (characters, story, environment). It is sometimes a little disturbing at times. I didn't see that with Doom 3. Doom 3 features a lot of extreme evil, but it's not so crazy weird.
  • Doom 3 has many more of those "Boo!" scary parts to it. In general it seems scarier and tense when you play. Bioshock is just tense... not so scary really.
  • Bioshock has a more obvious unavoidable storyline to it, and the storyline is more in depth. Doom 3 has story to it too, but some of it you don't encounter unless you explore around and read all the emails and other content in the levels.
  • Doom 3 has an expansion that is fun. There is no expansion to bioshock.
  • The enemies in Bioshock are cool, but they don't differ from each other as much as the Doom 3 enemies do. I won't name what the enemies are in either (don't want to spoil it), but the more I played into Doom it seemed like something drastically new would show up unexpectedly. In Bioshock, there were not so many surprises with enemy types and behavior. The enemies got old.
  • Bioshock features spell-like abilities (called plasmids) in addition to guns. Some of them are kinda cool. The guns in Bioshock are not as cool though. In Doom, the guns seemed more powerful and more fun.

I like Doom 3 more. I am playing through it again actually, which is something I rarely do. BioShock is a cool experience though. Definitely check it out when you get the extra cash. Good luck, mang 8)

I played and really liked both Doom 3 and Bioshock. As Bioshock is more original IMO, it would get my vote.
