You need to boot the Windows install disk on startup. You can do this by going into your BIOS (when your computer starts it'll say "Press [system specific key here] to enter setup/BIOS"). In the BIOS you want to find the boot order, or boot priority, when you find it, a good order should be floppy, CD-ROM, HDD. Save and exit. Then when the computer restarts, put in the Windows XP disk, it'll say "Press any key to boot from CD", press a key, it'll then bring you to the Windows XP installation menu where you can reinstall Windows over your current setup.

It doesn't attempt to boot off of the CD if it is inserted when you turn it on?

Well what does your disk say? Windows XP Home or Pro, I don't think there are disks that can install both.

Hmmmm, sounds pretty peculiar. I don't think pro disks can install home. Is this a computer you bought from a manufacturer or did you build it yourself?

Do you need Pro for any specific functionality? If I remember correctly the differences between the two are very minuscule.

Is it just me or is what you just said contradictory to your previous statements? You just said that your Pro disk keeps trying to install Home, why don't you just use that?

There has got to be a way to edit the boot priority on your computer, what model do you have? This would be the easiest way to solve your problem.

a couple of things, if you have a pro disk, that is all it will install, the second thing is that if you are running the original installation of your pavilion, it has a hidden partition on it put there by HP, it will default try to reinstall from there, so you may have only xp home licensed on the computer, that could be why you are getting this problem.

but like what Markie200 said, just tick the show updates button at the top of add/remove programs, and you can uninstall any service pack or update.

but why do you wish to "downgrade"? if you have lost internet connectivity, since the update, this is due to zone alarm running, which there is an update to fix on the ZA site, or you can change your firewall internet settings to medium for a workaround.
