When you install a new os, you reformat the partition... You lose everything

I think Vista does not allow you to downgrade, I don't think they wrote the scripts for it.

So you may have to reformat, but it will work.

Couldnt you put a new partition on the drive and install xp on that? Then you could copy your files from the vista partition to the xp so your would have all of your my music my videos my whatever that you wanted to keep. then you could delete the vista partition and format the NTFS from xp. boom you now have two hard drives in my computer one with windows xp whatever installed and one for extra storage or backup.

That is because it's an upgrade. XP is an old OS you can't expect to downgrade and keep your files. I don't see the point in switching to Xp though. That's a real downgrade.

Not true. You can install XP onto a Vista computer, you'll just have to find a BCD editor to add the vista loader to your ntldr list. I recommend easybcd or Vistabootpro.

Can I ask why you want to downgrade to a 7 year old OS?
