Ive been playing on normal up until the castle of red cliffe or whatever and have only died a few times, and this castle is just ridiculous. I dropped it down to easy and im at the part with the revenant and its just unbelievable. Ive never had trouble with any other RPGs, but this is just retarded. The only way a person not having extreme difficulties with this game on normal must be some gigicantic hardcore RPG nerd. The game is awesome..but i have to take a break its too frustrating

That's interesting. I've been thinking the game is too easy on the normal setting. Have you played party-based rpgs before?

you might consider easy setting. im glad they make it so i actually have to use skills during battle, not just autoattack. i'm playing on normal at about the same place you are, and there have only been a couple battles where i was running into trouble. try customizing your characters tactics and micromanaging them for better effect.

Probably cause you've played all the other "lighter" RPGs before... This is traditional RPG hardcore.... like Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale.... they are not easy games.

Some reviews noted idiotic difficulty spikes. No game should have such spikes, regardless of its hardcore or casual status.

Well, if that's the case then I agree with you. I was just stating that a traditional hardcore RPG from Bioware isn't as easy as other RPGs out there like Torchlight etc...

and the best part of this? You're only playing on Normal difficulty - there is still Hard and Nightmare settings above that

Seriously though - normal does have some very challenging parts that will require you to replay them several times until you get them right. This game is about so much more than a "perfect build". Unless you know how to use your characters, their abilities, and combine that with good tactics, you will see the "your journey ends" screen a lot.

low level spells are basically assistants (both cases: spell itself is low level and your mage is low level): you use them to weaken the enemies and so melee characters can finish them before the whole party get killed. later on, higher mages will join the main strike force.

If you have it on easy, it doesn't have FF enabled. I'm playing as a Rogue on normal and I'm not finding it that difficult. I've only reloaded three or four times and I'm several hours into it by now. There is a pretty significant difficulty spike though when you're going along blowing everything away and then you get to a boss who brings you back down a peg. I don't think it's overtly hard though for anyone who's familiar at all with team rpgs.

I wish the game was a bit more difficult. Im finding it challenging at times. But alot of the fights you can sleep-walk through. Playing on normal, probably play on Hard on second time through.

If you're talking about the Revenant summoned at the tombstone, you don't need to fight it. It's an optional enemy. In general you need to use a lot of strategy to win fights. You should make use of stuns and incapacitating or imobilizing moves to disable enemies if there's too many and you're bing overwhelmed.

It has a lot to do with the skills you choose to learn too. You want to get a healing spell since it helps a lot. Area of effect spells and abilities also help a lot too, including items. Then you have more strategy to think about by combining spells and abilities, such as freezing an enemy then moving your rogue behind it to shatter it. Cone of cold (or fire) is good for blasting enemies coming through a doorway. Just lure them in and run right past your mage then blast them.

Think about using the terrain and ambushing enemies. Have your party wait in one area out of sight while one member runs close to the enemy, pull it back to your other party members, and ambush the enemy. It's also a good way of getting ranged enemies (archers and mages) close enough to AOE them.

2 things. secret bosses are optional-->you don't have to fight them.

then, most important of all, secret bosses are meant to be fought after you find the perfect weapons for each member of the party. with those weapons, secret boss fights are no different from normal boss fights.

JRPG main game is ridiculous easy: just level up with infinite random encounters and level up some more.

JRPGs in general are easy. How easy is basically decided by how much time your willing to spend grinding. Obviously there are exceptions to this, but more often than not the more grinding you can tolerate, the more play hours you get out of a game, and the easier it is in general. If you take the longest Final Fantasy game and remove the need to grind, you'll find that it is no longer than the average RPG..8-12 hours. Grinding artificially inflates estimated hours of play. This is one reason why i'm content with a solid 8-12 hours of game play in a game. I prefer tighter stories with steady gameplay over trickles of storyline between needless random battles that serve no purpose other than to waste time.

What I find as hard might not be what other people find (even though I may be reloading/.dieing at the same rate as them)... not saying Im any better at the game than anyone else. I play BG/IWD, etc on hard (which is standard D&D rules) and am used to dieing a few times before I adjust tactics etc to get through an area.

Seems some people just want to breeze through all their games with no challenges at all (which I find as boring).

DA:O simpifies their traditional difficulty scheme and does it without dnd rules.

BG1 has easy, normal, dnd core and hard.

BG2 has easy, normal, dnd core, hard, and insane.

since DA:O only has three, I'm not sure whether the normal difficulty is comparable to dnd core or not. one thing for sure, if you can survive well the first playthrough at hard, it's not the insane in BG2.

if you're new to cIassical party CRPG, I'd recommend you to start with easy.

one thing is certain though, regardless of difficulty level, you're not going to be able to drink blood and mana potions your way through the game.

not that i've played much of the game ( around 20 min, busy week and getting busier :( ), but the game doesn't seem to provide the kind of challenge the dnd crpgs did. whether you're creating your character or fighting, there are fewer classes to choose and compare, fewer attributes to manage, and much fewer factors to consider. remember the time we spent to roll the perfect attributes in BG2? well, i spent 20 minutes to fix my face and 5 to create my class, so yea...

then my info is outdated (haven't gotten my copy yet).

if four, then it might be comparable to BG's easy, normal, core dnd and hard.

and I think it's quite suitable because dnd core level of difficulty is not for those are not familiar with cIassical CRPG at first playthrough.

it's understandable though, the game is going to be more streamlined and simpilfied. also, it's too much to ask Bioware, a single developer team, to create a rule set that's as complex as Dnd.

but, ha, I do love rolling an uber character and I see a possibility of a dnd (2 edition more than 3+) total conversion mod in the future.

nah, 3+ is the way to go. :D imo it's just much more robust and provides a more immersive rpg experience. one thing that stood out in my mind is how, in IWD2, a priest character of mine exorcised a spirit by using turn undead during a conversation. haven't played NWN2, but i expect to see alot of similar wow moments. :)

as long as it's dnd, that's good:D

anyway, 3+ is certainly richer and has many more skills and feats. however, it lacks in cIass restrictions for my taste; more rigid cIass limitations enhance the sense of role-playing for me. also, I just love the idea of minus AC

DA:O is surprisingly difficult and i was able to manage beholder caves in bg2 back when and went through IWD1+2 & NWN2+MotB and many others with no problems.

It is advised to set up morrigan as auto-level up for awhile, I accidentally went straight for her healing spells as opposed to some much needed AoE. Ive never used the environment layout to my advantage before, this is probably the first party-based RPG where Ive beenusing pinch points for tanking spots and setting up traps. Bosses are just potion intensive though and injuries seem quite detrimental so stock up on injury kits.

I think people who started off as a warrior or rogue are generally having a hard time.

I won't mock people who haven't played a hardcore RPG like the Baludr's Gate and Icewind Dale series.

I'll only say this: welcome to hardcore RPG's. You've been spoonfed RPG's as a "hero conquers all" difficulty. You've never experienced hardocore RPG's where a party member dies and you have to spend thousands of gold resurrecting him/her, never had to mourn the permanent loss of a party member, or reload within minutes because you found a dragon that wasn't supposed to be there.

Welcome to real RPG's, my friend.

After watching a few reviews saying that medium is pretty hard. i was sitting there between playing easy or medium...i chose easy, but i've decided to never pause, and play it like a dungeon siege game xD

[QUOTE="zomglolcats"][QUOTE="k0r3aN_pR1d3"] Console JRPG's are getting pretty easy. When FF12 came out, I beat it in less than a week (with school thrown in). Pvt_r3d
Yeah it's pretty hard to die in JRPG's anymore without trying to kill yourself on purpose.

Unless it's Demons Souls

Lol yeah I hear that game is hard. I really want to get it, but can't any time soon with Dragon Age, and L4D2

Good to hear I've been yearning for a difficult RPG in a loooong time. And yes I'm an old school hardcore rpg nerd :P

It only feels difficult because it has been a long while since we've had the pleasure of a real RPG. For those of you who find this experience unfamiliar, welcome to the roots of RPGs. Enjoy your stay in a thinking man's game.

The first real dragon you meet is optional. And when you do meet it you won't beat it. Not even on easy.

Is that the little dragon near the werewolf den? I managed to kill it somehow, on normal, just surround the dragon so that its cone shaped attack hits just one party member preferably Alistair with bumped constitution, just watch out for the permanent trap in the center.

No but good job on that one, it's hard too. I'm talking about a big dragon. It's called "High Dragon." I don't think you're meant to kill it until you're a higher level.
