Does anyone know why the character you create in Dragon Age Origins is mute? This isn't the 20th century, and space isn't an issue. This nearly ruined the game for me although I'm still working through it. Excellent dialogue, except for you. If Mass Effect could do it . . .

Mainly because you can be one of a few races/classes, plus two sexes... Whereas Sheppard is one guy so doing the voice was comparatively easy.

Sheppard is a guy or a gal. Two voice actors required. *proudly touts female Sheppard* As for Dragon Age, my guess is they wanted it to be reminiscent of their older RPGs where the main character was mute, like KotOR.

I thought it might have been older RPG's, but one voice could power all male characters, and one female. Better than none.

Yeah I think that is why. Plus there is a lot more dialogue in Dragon Age than in Mass Effect games so having to find multiple voice actors to voice every gender/race combo would be expensive. Still...voice acting in Mass Effect games is why I partially enjoy the dialogue there more than Dragon Age.

Only if done perfectly. And as we all know, perfection is unobtainable. I know exactly what my Gray Warden protagonist sounds like. All it took was a bit of imagination ;)

I never understood why this bothered people. Whether its Gordon Freeman in Half-Life or Link in Legend of Zelda, people always pick on this little point. Sometimes a voiced protagonist can ruin immersion, for me at least.

Well it's not like the protagonists in Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Fable, Oblivion, Jade Empire and NwN2 (and many others) weren't voiced... oh wait...

Just read the questions out loud your player is about to ask in a voice of your choice. And then you have voice for your character.

I agree. As soon as the main character speaks, I become very aware that I'm controlling a character. Which as you said, ruins immersion.

In DAO you can be dwarf elf human and many classes mage, city elf .... that means for every1 of combinations you would have to have a different actor.

While in ME you can be female or male and thats that...

Its that easy Salute!

yeh, in mass effect it's just male or female human there's way more options in dragon age and it would have been stupid to have one fixed voice for all the races.

No Mass Effect enough for you? Don't worry. Dragon Age 2 is being dumbed down thanks to casuals.

Fundamentally when a character is supposed to be you, is it really a great idea to have them speaking?

The "non-speaking" protagonist is a classic & enduring tool used to improve immersion.

You can think whatever you want without being forced to disagree with your onscreen self!

Also, from a practical angle, the lead character would have many, MANY times more lines to record than any other character so this saves time, money & space in development.

That is 99.9% it. As much spoken dialogue as there is in the game already, doing multiple dialogue options for multiple races and genders for the protagonist (and the 2-5 possible dialogue options at every branch) would pretty easily multiply the amount of voice acting in the game by 4x or more. There just isn't the budget, time or drive space for that sort of thing yet.

That's the reason, now, imagine recording every possibility with different voices?

No it won't... The game was ass on consoles and got bad reviews... They are probably more focused than ever on the PC version...

I dont understand why this is such a big deal......

There have been tons of RPGS where the main character didnt have a voice.

During my last playthrough, I wish I could have muted the main character. When you play as an male city-elf warrior with "wise" voice selection, he sounds annoying as hell with his remarks especially while fighting.

I got used to it eventually and by the end it really didn't bother me. It would take twice as long to get through the dialogue sequences if the ol' boy spoke. Wish I could import my character to DA2 :(
