An extremely tough choice but considered that you will eventually end up owning both I suggest you go with The Witcher first then later DAO + Awakening.

Hard to say really, I personally would go with the witcher, reasoning below:

DA:O (and expnasion) is a very good game, it has some decent mechanics and rules, and if you like party based games, it is pretty much a must, BUT!

You would be fooling yourself if you playied DA:O expecting something new and amazing, it is pretty much a series of cut and paste events from various fantasy books and movies (LOTR being extremely obvious as a source). It is well polished, but not even once did the thought "wow" cross my mind playing that game, It is a solid game no doubt, I like it alot, But if you are fan of old school RPGS you will find it lacking, if you are newer you may find it Old in terms of execution and implementation.

So it is not really what most of us were hoping it would be, but it is still a very good game, that often gave me a smile on my face.

The Witcher is a different beast, It is quite a while longer for one, and it does not dabble in clicheés at all, it does have elves and dwarfes but they are not what you would expect, the problematics are far more grown up, and the game always dabble in shades of gray, no such thing as good or evil, it just plainly doessnt exist in that game, just what the player thinks is good or evil, so it would be best to say the gameworld is neutral.

It is a whole lot faster pased in combat, tho first kicking off for real around when the player reaches lvl 9-10,apart from the silly "sex card" thing, it is a more complete gameworld, it feels more alive, head into an inn, and play dice? or local fist fighting turnament? feel free. Learn the inns and outs of alchemy your choice, the game is much more focused in players choices.

In the end The witcher comes off as a more "true" rpg, where the player has alot more say in the surroundings, and they eract more, then DA:O

TW is a less polished game tho, some things are implemented rather poorly and alot of people does not like the idea that you have a fixed character.

Gamewise I would TW to be the most enjoyable one, and DA:O to be the one with most polished one. One focuses on solitude, and the other focuses on the relations between people fighting together.

Then comes Price. TW is cheap as dirt now, and DA:O (and expansion if you want that aswell) is a fair bit more expencive.

So Id say buy TW now, and play that, when you are done the price of the DA:O expansion has likely fallen somewhat, then go out and buy that :P

In the end if you like RPGs you will end up with both.

The wicher EE with latest patch is an incredible game. A completly diffirent game with a specific pre made character and not another bioware rpg that you create a character and do the same stuff as all bioware games. I give props to the wicher for being a diffirent game. While witcher is a better game with better graphics too, dragon age has more content and more options. Cant say why you would need more more content though since the witcher is a big game.

I'd say the Witcher. It's cheaper now, and by the time you're finished with it and ready to play DAO (which may not be for a while, if you get a little burnt out on RPGs), it'll be cheaper.

Well the world starts small. Think the maps like regions like borderlands or kotor or mass effect. Later they get bigger and bigger and even bigger. i have to say i found the world interesting to look at and very well designed. There are things like dungeons but are very few and simple, for example they are nowhere near as good as exploring various locations on fallout 3. The characters? Most of them are copy and paste in the way they look. Think of them like kotor or mass effect. The main characters are interesting and the rest are generic copy and paste with few stuff to say and some dont make any dialogues just say a sentence and thats it. The main quest is the whole game. The secondary quests are mainly bits and parts of the main quest that must be done in order to progress the main quest, it does not matter in what order. So are the characters of the game that do not reflect in the main story. You can tell the diffirence from an priest that takes part on the first chapter of the game and a random priest later on the game. Same goes for a trader and a fat guy you meant earler. The only essential characters are the witcher's friends and enemies and some other guys lke the head of the city guard. Al the others are copy and paste. If you are looking for oblivion story sidequests quality you wont find it here. Its mostly kil that many monsters and bring me their heads without much story.

Easy one - The Witcher

If you want a good party based RPG - get Drakensang: The Dark Eye, or NWN 2 - they're both better than Dragon Age

who you can talk to is pretty much limited to story and quests in both DA:O and The Witcher. if you want to run around and talk somebody or nobody, each has some thing in his/her mind, Divinity 2 currently does that best.

as my answer to the thread question; story, character, gameworld and quest all go to The Wicher; combat goes to DA:O, especially it's party based (I like party RPG)

Definitely The Witcher, this one would suck you in the screenfrom start till the end. Witcher got plenty of interesting characters, especially if you make to chapter 4 which is my favourite because of the atmosphere. Story line is preety strong aspect in this game and your choices are REALLY important in creating story and the world of WItcher. The choices are not so easy and the consequences are often seen after few hours that's why you can;t just load your save and see what happen next, each play in Witchcer could be another experience, that's the greatest thing in this game. I reccomend you an expension set, the world of Witcher isn't so big but maybe because of that it's so much interesting as it is. Buy it and enjoy.

I am currently playing both Dragon Age and The Witcher right now, I found Dragon Age to be generic and didn't get blown away by the gameplay and story, there isn't exactly much choice just that you get to choice too. I am really liking The Witcher right now though, the game offers choices that leave you perplexed, great story, the only thing I hate is the model animation of Geralt. Overall The Witcher seems much more mature a game than Dragon Age and offers originality in the story, gameplay and combat.

Both are great games. DA:O is rather standard cookie cutter RPG in story and flare. The Witcher is a more noir, haunting, monster type story. The Witcher is the better game overall IMO but DA:O is also excellent.

I would say Dragon Age! I have yet to play the game but the reason why i say to get that first is because it already has an expansion out for it. So get Dragon Age and the expansion and you will have lots of gameplay. Then when you get The Witcher it will probably be around the time that The Witcher 2 will be coming out (depending on how much you game) so you can play them back to back.
