I see a lot of third party programs that aim to keep your drivers up to date. Do they do anything different from what Windows Update does? What are the advantages of using one of those programs?
It's really easy to keep your drivers up to date and neither of the solutions you mention will do so. Just periodically check your video card chipset site (nvidia or ati) Periodically check your sound card chipset site (likely creative) Periodically check your motherboard makers site (Asus, Gigabyte, etc) Periodically check your peripheral controllers site (Logitech, Saitek, etc) Three or four website visits will do what you need to do and it takes barely a few moments to do so.
Yeah... what WDT said. And then after, go to the 'windows update site.' But always trust your 'video card chipset site' 'sound card chipset site' 'motherboard makers site' 'peripheral controllers site' update offerings first over what the 'windows update site' is offering. I've encountered cases where I updated my ATI card at the ATI site with the absolute latest drivers and console, then went to the 'windows update site' and they tried to get me to overwrite it with older drivers. The windows update site offers stuff that is signed by Microsoft, and doesn't offer stuff that isn't signed; even if unsigned stuff from the manufacturer is newer and better. Keep that in mind when using 'windows update site' to update graphics and audio drivers. I would suggest to use the method WDT suggested first, then go to the windows update site second; and forget those third-party driver-update programs; especially if they are freeware (adware/spyware/malware).
