Is it better to have two gtx 470 or buying a single gtx 590 or 580? Performance wise only, price is not an issue.

590 > 470 SLI > 580

Though, I wouldn't really buy any of those cards.
I'd much rather get 570 SLI or 6970 CF.

the single 580 is my pick for two VERY good reasons

1) not every game supports dual gpu's (two 470's) and so therefore you may not even use the second card at all :p theyre getting more support but their far from full adopted

2) dual gpu's are maintanence heavy. this one isnt so obvious but basically the gtx 590/6990/5970/5870x2 require your always fully updated and fully patching your games you may end up preforming worse than single cards like the 6970 and 580 anyway.. and even then there is no guarantee's of this

id also like to add that if i was to get a dual gpu id sooner get the hd 6990 at least its temps dont hit unhealthy extreme's while under load, it wouldnt sacrafice any preformance and it uses slightly less power as well.

(if you want to ignore dual gpu's (which i recommend btw)

gtx 580

HD 6970

gtx 570 /gtx 480 (the 570 is basically a 480 that uses less power and generate less heat)

hd 6950 2gb /hd 6950 1gb (normally only 1fps difference between the two)

hd 5870/gtx 560 ti

This is of course, using the current gen from both camps. No point in looking into a last gen card, unless you're on a low budget.

well last gen cards still have places in that lineup like the 5970 & 5870

I alway see people saying that dual GPUs tend to be worse then a single GPU - which I won't arguee. I have honestly not had any problems aside from The Witcher with my dual GPUs.

I used to run dual 7600GT - then dual 8800GTS 512 - now dual GTX 280s. Now, granted not all drivers work well for dual GPUs; I remember specifically that driver 182.50 (for almost a year after it came out) was the only driver that worked wonders with my 8800GTS 512, all other drivers caused many, many graphical issues

Anyways, I haven't run across any other issues during my time with dual GPUs, but maybe my experience isn't of the norm and I've just been lucky.

Anybody know how good are dual 460's? I have one already and don't know if I should sell it and upgrade or just double up. It's a gigabyte 1gb 460gtx, and I see it on newegg now with rebate for $155

Dual GTX460 1gb's more or less can compete with the GTX580 and almost identical at higher rez(though some games might have scalability issues).Go for that over the GTX580 if you don't mind the maintainance issues of dual GPU's as dual GTX 460 1gb's are cost effective.
