a game that has been in development for over a decade, can anyone tell me why they are still bothering with making this or why anyone is interested? they released more promotional information in 07 but I just don't see why.

I think they're actually close this time. I remember reading something a year back or so that said that 3D Realms had hired a bunch of experienced developers, which is good, because I get the feeling they didn't know what they were doing back in the early days of development.
The new Duke will be a good game, but probably not a great one, and that's fine with me. I'll be happy just as long as I get to kick alien a$$ while Duke spews out countless one liners.
I've been writing a novel for six years, now. I've restarted completely several times, scrapped entire characters and plot threads, chopped up the chronology, significantly altered the subtext and themes, renamed it no less than five times (and I still hate the title) and made all manner of other minor changes here and there.
Why? I wasn't happy with what I had.
I imagine the DNF team is much the same with their game. And it really is their game - this isn't a game about money, and it's not a game about making their fans happy. They want to make themselves happy. They want to make their perfect game. That's how I see it, and I can completely understand it.
And the longer you spend working on something, the harder it gets. After playing (or reading) the same thing over and over and over, you start to think, I'm kinda sick of that, let's try something else. They may very well be chopping out great things just because they've spent too long playing them, and they're now just sick of it and want something fresh. It happens.
They're making the game backwards.
They started off with a full game, and released lots of screenshots and videos. Then a few years later they released a handful of screenshots and a video clip. Then they released a few screenshots. Then they released a promo image with no gameplay whatsoever.
Yep, they started with a full game and they're slowly deconstructing it. That's what I think.
So eventually they'll be back to showing us concept art, and five years from now someone will say "You know what would be a great idea? Let's make another Duke game!"
why they bother? BEcause of fans like me ^^
Ive been awaiting this game, for as long as Ive been waiting for a new fallout game (longer infact)
And now it seems that both series will have a new game out. The duke games (especially the 3d one) are amongst the best games Ive ever playied, it was layied back full of humor and self irony, and Ive never EVER felt more rewarded then with dukes weapons... they felt "right" somehow...
I miss the tongue-in-cheek gameplay, and the explosions... the trips through red light district, and chinese resturants...
In short I miss what made duke3d big, noone else have ever succeded in having that kind of humor, games today are all too "serious" I mean, wheres the humor that once were abondant in games? And no I do not think serious sam fits at all.
I hope that they make a game that they are satisfied with, and I will buy it... Not saying that I will like it, noone knows.

fatshodan
I guess that makes sense, I respect them for wanting to finish even after all this time. I assume what your saying is just speculation but I dont think its too far from the truth.
Duke is a relic of a male stereotypical world where demeaning the opposite sex, belting out pathetic one liners and having absoluetely no story at all is cool. He needs to retire. There is no room in the 21st century for characters like Duke Nukem.Johnny_Rockhe is more fun than any other character to date so gtfo pls :)

I would take Duke any day over Gordon Freeman, Glados, etc.
