The number is the burn speed. I've looked up the differences between + and - several times and to be honest I've never had a reason to remember them. Most if not all burners are both anyway so it hasn't mattered one way or the other in my experience. I don't burn a lot of discs though, so maybe someone who does knows better than I.

Hey I once googled dvd -r vs dvd +r and it gave me a big article that explained the differences. I forgot it now , but they said the dvd +r are superior toe the dvd - r in a lot ways, but the technology doesnt exist the take advantage of the superiority of the dvd +r , so it really doesnt matter which one to choose.

Ive seen some dvd player reject dvd +r discs and they accept dvd -r disc with the same content.

As a rule of thumb, DVD-r's are fantastic for backing up data and things of that nature. If you are one of those who like to backup DVD movies, then stick to using DVD+r's.
