Is it stupid to buy a DX9 video card because they are so cheap right now or is it pretty much dead technology? I havent really been keeping uptodate with graphic cards can someone fill me in on whats going on with DX10 right now?

well there certainly will be DX9 games for a while yet. vista doesent have the install base to warrant DX10 only games. u wont get all the bells and whistles but a good dx9 card will certainly serve u well for a while.

a health warning about the current crop of dx10 cards also. avoid the 8600 series and the ati equilevent. there good for dx9 but for dx10 u can forget it. they dont have the grunt. the performance of higher end cards like the 8800GTX and high end ati cards is also in doubt.....initial tests are not good at all. games are playable but theres not alot of head room. persaonlly id hold off for next gen cards and their performance benchmarks to arrive before making a decision. its possible that both nvidia and ati completly underestimated the demands of dx10. i wish i knew this before i got my PC :S.

Well, since Nvidia and Ati are planning new cards by the end of the year or early next year that will include support for what they call "DirectX 10.1", You'd probably be ok maxing out most games at the DX9 level until then, just so they can get feature sets and stuff sorted out, unless you can get a good price on a DX10 card, DX9 would be fine.
