Well over the years i had cards from both guys but i allways supported the little guys more anyway from what i'v seen at gamespot's hads-on ... it seems like ATi has the better performance i mean the only thing Nvidia has betther is the 712 DDR3 but in the rest it can not compete with Ati's engenering design ... anyway it was funny to se that Ati's card is allitle bit weak because of the unfinished drivers ... my only hope is that they will make another test after 4 moths like they did with the consoles .... anyway because Ati is much more cheaper& it comes with the black box i'm going to buy it hoping it will have better drivers in the near future ..... but if you had to buy 1one of this high-end cards wich 1one it will be ? P.S i'm not a fanboy so pls no fanboyism !

The 8800gtx is much better than the 2900xt, will beat it in Unreal Engine 3 (per Tim Sweeney, due to the fillrate), and will be and is a better card overall. The 2900xt was one of the biggest let downs of the past few years.

You don't know that for sure because the drivers for 2900XT aren't that optimized yet.

Doesn't even GTS have better performance than XT, except in SLI/Crossfire.

The benchies for the HD2900xt failed pretty hard, 8800gtx looks like the winner this time around. I bet the 8800 uses less power and runs cooler too.

Yes I do, the fill rate issue is a HARDWARE issue, and ATI cannot make a driver change the HARDWARE.

Tim Sweeney: Yes, we'll ship Unreal Tournament 3 with full DirectX 10 support. Support for multisampling is the most visible benefit. We're also able to use video memory more efficiently on Windows Vista under DirectX 10, enabling a given machine to use higher-detail texture settings than are possible in Windows Vista under DirectX 9. Most of Unreal Engine 3's effects are bound by fill-rate rather than by higher-level features like hardware geometry processing, so the real impact of DirectX 10 is incrementally better performance rather than entirely new features.

I've heard that part of the faults of the 2900 XT, such as the massive power consumption, are partly because it was built on a larger process than originall intended in order to bring it to market after all this waiting. Sadly, it's resulted in a product that's both overpriced and underperforming; a GeForce 8800 GTS 640 MB would be a better deal for the money, if you ask me(mostly because it consumes much less power). The 2900 XT is most certainly NOT the DX10 equivalent of the famed 9700. However, if they were to put back the video decoding chip and reduce heat and power consumption a great deal in an upcoming revision, ATI could make a serious dent in nVIDIA's stranglehold.
