Hey, I'm looking at a new monitor for my PC / 360 setup, and I happened across this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8260516&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat104900050011&id=1170289357904 (damn that thing's long)

Anyways, something caught my eye about this one.  Namely, the line where it says 1000:1 contrast ratio, 3000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.

So, wtf is dynamic contrast ratio?  Would setting the screen to maximum contrast get me 3000:1 or 1000:1?

Nevermind.  I just got off work and I'm tired, so I blank-mindedly asked here before doing any research.  I think I get it.

Dynamic Contrast Ratio stands for "Our Contrast Ratio is so low we are too embarrassed to tell you what it really is"

Ignore the dynamic contrast ratio, it is marketing gibberish, what you are interested in is the regular contrast ratio.

Actually referred to as the static contrast ratio but yea you have the idea. And just in case anyone doesn't know a good static contrast ratio is 1000:1 and seems to be the norm. Still you want to check the TV out in person before you buy because it could show up on your doorstep and you'll find out the color looks like crap and is terribly innaccurate.

There is no "ideal" ratio. There is also no standard to measure it. Most decent sets these days have very good contrast ratios. Plasma has a higher contrast than LCD but many LCD's are very good. Anything from Samsung, Panasonic, Sony, or even Sharp and Toshiba should be fine.

What about Dells, homie? I've seen a lot of cheap ass Dell's on eBay.
