OK so I just got a new pair of OCZ System Elite 2GB DDR2 800 RAM - planning to give away my old RAM to a friend or relative.

I was working on some OC-ing during the afternoon, after a lot of trial and error, reboots and around 3 hours - I got my E2160 to 3.2GHz - which is 356mhz on a 9x multiplier.

However, the voltage supplied to the CPU is concerning me (the voltage was manually set, letting the BIOS handle it always produces problems) - here is a screenshot from CPU-Z:

It's using up to 1.42 volts of power?! Isn't that a bit overboard since Legion Hardware managed to get to 3.4ghz at around 1.4v only?

If I drop it a bit further down, just a little, Windows will not boot or resets all the time :S

Dunno - might be the CPU batch I got is a shoddy one, but is the Vcore too high?

Also, I think I'm getting an FSB wall at 370mhz, more volts (CPU, DDR and NB) supplied = no dice...

Any comments or opinions welcomed.

with overclocking, and any technology as a matter of fact, no piece of equipement is the same, even if they are from the same manufacturer and the same model, they are never the same. your equipement might be different to what Legion hardware used aswel, motherboards make up a big deal in overclocking aswel. cooling aswel, you would be able to get it further if you were using water cooling rather then air, or if you got a better cooler. then, i would say that a 3.2 overclock on your processor is a good overclock none the less.

I would clock it down to around 2.6GHz and set the voltage down to something like 1.3-1.35.

Voltage is not as much a problem as heat generated. Make sure you have good cooling and you should be ok. Make sure to check your temps. Also, overclocking can affect your ability to use the CPU at the rated speed. If you every decided to downclock, or back to stock settings, the machine may not POST. I had this happen before.

Actually - I've been running 3Ghz with stock voltage fine - so if I have to revert, then I would want to go back to 3Ghz.

Well - a slight play around with the RAM - it seems that the system is stable. A few more test before I can confirm 3.2Ghz on it :D

To jamie - yeah I know, Legion Hardware did use a Asus P5K board - which looks a lot easier to OC with - but water cooling for now is out of the question - I mean, for this CPU?! :lol

Nice, you should stick with that.

Well after more fiddling around - it seems that 3.2Ghz can't be stable as well - Orthos fails after 5 minutes and played CSS for around 20 mins before computer restarts - so I'm just going to stick with 3Ghz for now (hey, thats around a 70% OC - not bad)

Thanks for help anyways people!

It seems to be slightly high but im not sure for that chip as my E6600 is running at 3.3GHz on 1.38v, so cant understand as why yours would need more power unless its the different models i.e. E2160, E6550etc

Different chips and different binning.

What is your voltage set to in the BIOS?

CPU-Z rarely reads an accurate voltage, although the new version has got a lot better at it.

If you have the Vcore set to auto in the BIOS, I suggest you change it ASAP - its probably providing much more than is needed..
