Today EA has unveiled in a new entry in the long-running Sims series, The Sims Medieval.
This new standalone game is a radical departure for Will Wright's creation, which has previously always been set in the modern day.
"The Middle Ages is a time of intrigue, legend, and excitement. It offers a perfect backdrop for a brand new series from The Sims studio due to the limitless stories that can be told," said Scott Evans, The Sims Studio's GM.
"The Sims Medieval offers a new way for players to experience The Sims which we hope fans will enjoy, and it features gameplay that fans of strategy and role-playing games will find appealing such as controlling an entire kingdom and quest-based gameplay mechanics."
Players will be able to build their own medieval kingdom, create characters from all walks of life whether peasants, bards, royalty or blacksmiths.
This move may alienate some of the IP's more casual fans, but it is a big statement of intent from the developer which wants to push EA's most reliable money maker into uncharted territory.
There will be a wealth of new storytelling possibilities via quests and new career opportunities, all carried out with the sort of lighthearted fun one would expect from the series.
The Sims Medieval will be available exclusively on PC during Spring 2011. We are sure to hear more about this exciting spin-off during EA's conference at Gamescom.
