I just came across this artcile. So is this guy telling us in our face that all EA games henceforth will feature always-online DRM, even if its a single player game? Or does he mean to say that EA will completely stop putting out single player games? Either way, EA is a disgrace to the gaming industry. So, your thoughts?

As always, he's saying all EA games will have some form of online component. This doesn't mean they all have multiplayer - Autolog qualifies as an online component.

Hmmmm..but the way he said it, gives an impression that he's being totally arrogant and indirectly saying that all future EA games will have always online DRM.

It makes sense in the era of DLC. You need an online portion that you can make content for and sell at a premium price.

Only game i currently play that's from EA (DICE, but you get the idea) is BF3 and later on BF4... Which is pretty much made to be played online, so this doesn't bother me at all. Either way, there hasn't been a singleplayer game from EA that was really worth it, so for singleplayer games, i look somewhere else.

don't jump into conclusions. as far as i can tell, they will just include somekind of online component. i'm fine with that, as long as they are still playable offline.

however, if the next EA adventure/RPG singleplayer game will not be playable offline, i'm boycotting. i will not tolerate that shit. but again; that's not what he was saying.

When is EA not publicly announcing their suicide? They seriously need to get better people in their Public Relations department and start listening to their customers concerns and solving the problems. This company is on it's way to being the next THQ.

Considering they pulled the always-online DRM from The Sims 4, the game that is likely to be their biggest PC game in the next few years, I'm not sure how you got to that conclusion. He didn't at all say anything about always online yet you're trying to put words in his mouth.

He's simply saying they aren't going to offer any single-player only experiences anymore. While there will be single-player components, every one of their games will have something that ties it to a community. This is hardly suprising for EA. He also used this time to say they have a lot of F2P stuff coming up which is always a multiplayer experience.

The new Need for Speed has seamless multiplayer. You could be playing single player then be dropped right into a multiplayer race without even hitting a loading screen. The devs said you can play it fully offline but you'll be missing out on some really awesome races.

That's a really cool way of doing multiplayer. Seamlessly connecting it to single player so it's not some separate component of the game yet the game does not need it to run.

sounds great. we need more games like that.

It's all about the money for EA. What they want to happen is for developers to released an almost finished game and then have them sell DLC's that will add to and finish the content of the original game. They basically want you to pay them twice for the same game. This requires some sort of online component to the game. So it's much much worse than always on DRM.

The majority of EA's customers enjoy single-player experiences. They're only doing this to push a draconian DRM scheme on their paying customers.

I do agree that they pulled always-online from SIMS 4, but we're talking about EA, which has actually been rated among the worst companies by consumers for several years in a row, I guess. So it wouldn't be a surprise if EA actually announce that they would be going back to always-online just a day before the release of Sims 4, because by then most would have already pre ordered the game. Almost every gamer I come across usually hurls abuses at the mere mention of 'EA'.

But coming to think of it, I do feel that EA has changed. They pulled this always online from SIMS 4, and more importantly, they're now offering refunds on Origin games, which even Steam, GOG, UPlay etc. never do. So sometimes I do feel that EA has turned over a new leaf, but its a bit too early to actually come to that conclusion.

also remember; game development (talking about triple-A) is more expensive than ever before. i don't mind paying from DLC if i think the content is worth it. no-one is forcing you to buy any DLCs, you know...

e: how can the OPTION of having extra content on sale be a bad thing for anyone who bought the original? it's not like there are final levels missing from the game or anything.

then some might argue "but they should've included it in the game in the first place!". well, if you bought the game, enjoyed it, thought it was worth your money, then how the hell is it suddenly NOT worth your money anymore when they announce a DLC? i understand the frustration on day-1 DLC, but other than that, they are fine. as fine as expansions have been for ages. sometimes more worth it, sometimes less worth it.

I'd rather prefer the old style of expansions rather than DLCs. they release DLCs too frequently and the combined cost would be quite high. Also, even though the DLCs are frequent, having to wait for another DLC actually breaks the flow and momentum with respect to my interest in the game. But in case of expanion packs, I usually get to play what feels like a complete game at a stretch, and I also personally feel that expansions usually offer more bang for the buck compared to DLCs.

Only upcoming games (off the top of my head) from EA are BF4, Titanfall (both of these made for online), and SSX 2 if they actually make it.

I don't see the connection. You can have a game that can be played offline and offer DLC for it at the same time. The only issue is a requirement to be always connected to some EA servers.

Ive come to realize that the more games go online, the less I play them.

I never liked forced online interactions of any sort in my games. If I want to play a game online Ill buy a game meant for it like a MMO or battlefield. I enjoy playing WOW and battlefield 3, but I also dont like online being forced into a game that is otherwise a single player game.

Last number I saw for the Humble Origin Bundle was $10 million USD worth of bundles sold. How much money is EA getting from that? None. How exactly are they in it for the money again? I know everyone loves to hate EA, but it just gets old and now when you have people literally jumping to conclusions off a vague quote, it's way past just be old. It's frickin annoying.

I wonder how many customers they are going to lose by not catering to the offline audience. It must be more than EA thinks.

Offline experiences doesnt necessarily mean no SP games. Now they'll just throw random functions in your face, a la the ever growing 'mingle player' experience.
