As I find myself starting up Metro 2033 for another playthrough, I find myself thinking more and mroe about developers based in Eastern Europe. I truly feel that some of the most immersive games available come from this side of the world. Sure they do not have the resources to make games well optimized, but I think they do one heck of a job for what they have. In my opinion some of the most atmospheric games have been made by developers from Eastern Europe such as Metro 2033, STALKER, and Cryostasis.

I was just wondering how some of you feel about games from this part of the world. I feel they do not get the credit they deserve. Thoughts?

Metro 2033 was a pretty awesome experience. Could have been better optimized, but for a 9 hour single player game and no multiplayer I feel I stillgot my $50 worth in that game. You really liked Cryostasis though? Have to check that one out.

Yea I really love Cryostasis. I have a Digital copy and a sealed box copy lol. I would really love to see what some of these developers could do if given a larger fund.

hehe, indeed they are...

I think some of it has to do with eastern european devs not making games for a wide audience, but making games they want to make.

You can feel and see thatthese games are not run-of-the-mill assembly line games, they are unique with a well thought up gameworld, often breaking away from conventional gameplay and balance.

I really like those games, thy remind me a great deal of the 90-early 2000s west european games. I think I would say that they have soul.

So much unlike most other games we get now, which aims for as broad audience as possible, with as low diffeculty as possible to get an easier entry to the game.

I guess its the saying "try to please everyone and you end up pleasing no one" at work with those games...

Not that there aint comming good games out of Japan or The west in general, just hard to find amongst "generix game ##".

Im quite glad we still have the eastern european devs making what they want.

I never thought of that Maddie. That good very well be the reason these games appeal to me. They aren't made for a wide audience. Never really though of it that way.

yeah, I think that in terms of game-development eastern europe is in the mid-late 90's PC development in the rest of the world.

If this game is anything like STALKER, then its pretty damn good. You are right, they create some amazing games, although STALKER is the only one I played thoroughly.

Western developers did this at one point of time, but not anymore. Everything is has to be like a hollywood movie here.

Yeah it's kind of sad how the quality of games from the West have either stagnated or even regressed.

I would agree with you. Those three games all have more pros then cons. I can live with them beign unoptimized but my bigger problem with eastern European developers is that their games are usually pretty buggy.

Agreed on all the thoughts so far. The games like Witcher, STALKER and Metro have a different feel to them than games produced in the west, which is a good thing. The point above about them making games they want to make is very, very true. Sure, some games may be a little rough around the edges and they can be also pretty difficult, but I'd take that anyday over the types of games we often see, where they mollycoddle you at every step.

They also brought us Heroes of Might and Magic V, King's Bounty Legend and the Disciple series. Those were quite the treat to a big HOMM fan such as myself.

Metro is perhaps the most western-like game I have played from a European pc developer in a very long time.

Otherwise developers like Ice Pick Lodge deserve more attention. They are doing more for the medium than the vast majority of triple A developers.

To be honest i dont like the European developers for their low quality design standards. But yeah i have to agree as unoptimized metro 2033 and cryostasis, they were still amazing games. I just hope they make profit and expand and get better on what they do. Its good to see there are developers that actually have ideas to put in their games and i would like to see more games from them. But seriously some polish wouldnt hurt, i mean its all about polish nowdays i would love to see those devs rising up and becoming the top names in game industry and they got to raise their quality standards to achieve that.

The same place that brought us STALKER also brought us Cossacks, second game was horribly optimised and is still a pain to run but a great game.

Cryostasis - I never even heard of this, but it's right up my alley. I really liked Metro 2033 and games that are atmosphere-laden are some of my favs. This looks like a sure buy for me. Thanks for the heads up!

I think metro is optimized just fine. Its really very scalable, you can turn on many bells and whistles if you have the extra power, but if you don't it looks great at even low and will run on just about anything (while looking better than the 360 version). Most games these days don't have the option for half the bells and whistles that metro does, and if you enable all of them you have to keep that in mind.

I think the best games can come from anywhere, the north american devs are a bit stale right now though.

Well I dunno about the others but Black Sea Studios and Haemimont got really really good sales on local soil. Even if they sold very little in the U.S. and West Europe, here they did pretty well - they make quality games and sell them for about 5-10$

There have been some excellent games coming out of eastern europe in recent years, and I agree with the comments of several others above that it's because they approach making a game with a different mindset to how the rest of europe / america have become focused on other things. Western attitude is that a game must be a huge hit straight away and appeal to as many people as possible. If it hasn't sold x million copies within it's first month then it is regarded as a flop or failure. Sales after this don't seem to be as important, and lifetime sales are totally ignored. The focus is turning a fast buck, getting money in the first few months, then ignore the product, let it die, and get people to buy your next one. Eastern (european) attitudes are perhaps fresher and less cynical to the ways of the gaming industry - similar to where western devs were say 10-15 years ago. They can choose to make a game for a niche market, and go ahead and make it because the devs love the concept and know that there will be gamers that want to buy it. It won't be made with a mega budget, but neither will it be required to hit massive sales targets in a very short time period. these games continue to rack up sales over a much longer period as their reputation grows by word of mouth. We still see threads every few days by people asking if the Witcher is worth playing - not because it is a new release or they have seen advertising for it, but because of all the positive comments they have read from other gamers that have tried and loved it. It is a game held in high regard by a lot of people that have played it. I think our expectations are also different for eastern devs. If we hear about a new game from a western major studio, we instantly expect a game to be of a very high standard, support the latest and greatest tech, and includes loads of features. From an eastern dev, I wouldn't say we necessarily expect less, but don't have such a fixed idea of what to expect from them, so when they do produce something very good it shines even more.

I have nothing to add, except that I completely agree. Some of my favorite games during the past few years have been made by Eastern European devs. They certainly have a unique atmosphere to them.

I appreciate the fact eastern European developers are much more PC focused than western ones. The western developers seem to have mostly flocked towards the console market. The eastern ones just need to lay off Starforce drm and they will be fine. That's the a major problem with some of their games.
