Bad news for PC gamers who are looking to upgrade to the GTX 800 series because while the 28nm Maxwell chips are currently available in the GTX 750, 750 Ti, but 20nm designs might be delayed. Here are the latest GTX 800 series news.

Sweclockers is reporting that Nvidia's next GPU design will be delayed from late 2014 to some point in 2015.

The report stems from the fact that Taiwanese contacts claiming that TSMC, the foundry that produces chips for Nvidia, is not prepared for a full-on 20nm chip production run.

Currently, Nvidia relies on two major designs in its GeForce graphics cards. Kepler is the chip type found in many of the 700 series GPUs, as well as the Titan line. A newer architecture, called Maxwell, was introduced in the GTX 750 and 750 Ti back in February. These existing Maxwell chips, which are also at the heart of the GTX 800M chips making the rounds in new gaming laptops, are built on a 28nm fabrication, while the Maxwell's of the future are going to be built with the aforementioned 20nm process.

The reported delay means the next GeForce line -- presumably the GTX 800 or GTX 900 series -- will be bumped from Q4 2014 into 2015. Sweclockers says there's a chance of one high-end 20nm Maxwell model being released in 2014 (that line's equivalent of the GTX 780 ot 780 Ti, perhaps), but there's no guarantee of that happening.

Cyberland PC reports that the GTX 800 series are going to be significantly more powerful than the GTX 700 series but their pricing would be lower than when the top of the line cards of the GTX 700 series became available. So atleast there are some good GTX 800 series news that came along with the release date delay.

Perfect. Don't know if I could justify replacing my 780s in 2014, but in 2015 they'll be ANCIENT and it'll be upgrade time!

I'm running a 670 atm....runs everything fine but if I'm going to upgrade I want it to be worth it....would a 780 be worth the jump?

Well, if it runs everything and you are happy with it, I would just wait. The 780 is a great card of course but generally I say wait until your current card fails to meet you expectations before upgrading.

I guess this could be good thing for me since my 780ti is still rocking my games

At 1080 no its not worth it. Now if you ran 1440p+ or multiple monitor setup yeah it could be worth it

At 1080 The 780 is around 35% faster, at 1600p its like 45% faster

My 670 still maxes every game out, I could care less until something comes along that actually pushes the GPUs we have. Seems to me the CPUs are the bottleneck and the DX API are what are holding us back, DX12 will be more of a boost than a new GPU, cannot wait for that leap.

I'm running 1440 but still my 670 handles everything pretty well...I'll just wait and see how things go but it seems strange that my almost 2 year old card is still such a contender.

Which makes the rumors of AMD releasing the 20nm 3xx series this year a bit less credible.

I continue to feel good about that second 780ti.

game graphics in general have stagnated because of the consoles my old 8800GT SLI lasted me until 2011 until the 512mb Vram wasnt enough

And here I was hoping to get the 20nm cards to replace my old GTX 275 (new rig as well) this summer/fall. Is the wait worth it? Should I tough out another 6 months with my old computer for these graphics cards?

Well the issue here is, if you wait for the next best thing thats right around the corner, you'll never buy anything because the next best is always "coming soon". Luckily the current generation of cards (AMD & Nvidia both) are excellent so buying now is a great option.

That's true. I know GPUs and CPUs update every year / 6 months. I just don't want to be gated like I was last time. My dad (who made my rig back then) had gotten the last gen of duo cores (E8500) while the core i5/i7 had just come out and he got the last gen of DX10 cards (GTX 275) while the DX11 cards (400 series) were just around the corner. If he had gone with the newest stuff, I could have squeezed another year out of my PC, since all games are starting to require quad cores and DX 11 GPUs. I know that time is probably an exception and in general little changes between new GPUs and CPUs, but still.

I just don't want something like that happening. That's all

Looks like my GTX 460 will need to hang on just a little bit longer, luckily (or unluckily) my back-log is large enough that I might be through my current games by the time the 800s and "next-gen" games are out in full swing.

delay is good, maybe it'll be more powerful if its released this far from now. A release now would be nothing much improved. They need to price drop these high end video cards though, they shouldn't cost 2-3 times more then a cpu. 400 dollars is the max, any higher is a big joke and insulting to anyone with common sense.

I have 1080p and 1440p monitors whatever runs best i play on so i can stick with my 680gtx for a while still. When i hit a wall i guess i'll have no choice but to upgrade and bite the bullet.

Good. I was planning to stick with my 680 until 2015 anyway.

Good to see a fellow comrade running a GTX 460 too. Mines still a champ and performs well for a little bugger.

Also... Because of this, everyone who bought 780(Ti) early or even Titan (Black) got a lot for their money. Well more than expected and more than we who bought 680 got :x

pretty sure both nvidia and amd will still have a new lineup this year albeit in 28nm... nvidia can somewhat get it out easier due to their experience with 750 maxwell while AMD hasn't had anything with their new architecture.

I don't understand why people would want a delay?

It's not like your current gpu would degrade in performance if a new gpu came out.

I got tired of waiting and just got a 780 this past weekend. Was hoping they were going to at least announce it by now, so I'm glad I just went forward with a 700 card.

@napo_sp: i think so too. Read elsewhere that the 880GTX would be released with 28nm processing. I will try to find the link again.
