Link?Eurogamer: Is it fair to say then that it's based on existing technology?
Todd Howard: The technology is ours and it is inspired by the technology we have. We have a lot of it. But that's our starting point - the Fallout 3 tech. It started with Morrowind, we went to Oblivion, we did a lot between Oblivion and Fallout 3 because now we had final hardware - with Oblivion we had six months on final hardware, so Fallout 3 technically does a lot more than Oblivion. The new stuff is an even bigger jump from that.
I can say it is on the existing platforms, which we're really happy with. You almost feel like you have a new console when you see the game.

Yeah any future Bethesda game will probably have a modified version of that engine. The new version of Gamebryo: featuring stiff animations, awkward conversations and bugs galore! :) The game will still be great though.

They did a lot between Oblivion and Fallout 3? I guess improving the shadows was a breakthrough... I hope this time the engine is getting seriously overhauled... either that or get some damn fluid movement in the game (I want to feel like I am walking and not just sliding over the ground).Indeed. This game is going to suck because it's running on the crappy Gamebryo engine. They are using the same engine because the game has to run on crappy console hardware that is 6 years old. The game will be dumbed down for the console audience and PC users will be shafted by this.
Follow me now?

Did you know that they've been using this engine since Morrowind? So at which point do you think we got "shafted"? They tend to use them in pretty much all their games and I agree there are many flaws like stiff animations, bugs etc. but that has nothing to do with anything being dumbed down. That's just the quality of their engine. In spite of these minor irritations, Bethesda always ends up making a thorough open-world and immersive RPG.

The quality of the franchise drastically decreased after Morrowind.
Morrowind's version of the engine was much better if you ask me. Oblivion just sucked hard.
I seriously hope this does not turn into another Morrowind vs Oblivion debate. We have yet to see any gameplay footage (including what engine it uses). Personally, I am really excited after seeing the trailer, hope the modding tools are just as good as before if not better.
Well for some reason i dont think they will do more morrowind and less oblivion. Instead we will end up with another meh setting, with meh characters, meh voice acting and less rpg elements? Atleast it seem to be how all RPG's do now days so... :( Oh well i will wait untill the gameplay is released.
So it still uses Gamebryo and it's continuing the tortuously boring plot of Oblivion with the same dull, uninspired art styIe. Yeah, I think I'll be skipping this one. Eragon3131I love how you think that this is a continuation of the Oblivion story because old epic voice man mentioned the gates opening simply in passing. That was only mentioned to get across to the viewer that this game is a direct sequel. Also, did you get your crystal ball from Amazon? I want to see that dull, uninspired art style as well.
Actually I got it off eBay because I found it much cheape...waaaaaait a minute, you're not really interested in my crystal ball are you?
But seriously, this interview combined with the trailer make it clear that the game is in fact a direct continuation of TESIV and will have the same crappy graphics. The art, judging by the depictions of the generic soldiers in the stonework of the teaser trailer (who looked exactly like the ones from TESIV), will still be the same generic, uninspired material from Oblivion.
Uhg, the Morrowind Vs Oblivion debates are just stale at this point, alright fanboys I have some bad news for you...they're BOTH FINE GAMES. None of this "lol, Oblivion is garbage", because the VAST majority of people enjoyed BOTH games, and that's right it's 'vast' in ALL caps, and an underline. BOTH are game of the year titles, end of story, let's move on. I mean at some point Al Gore voters had to accept that George Bush became president, let it go, time has passed, Besthesda is not out to get you, alright? Besthesda is our friend.
The teaser was pretty lame, and given Bethesda's recent track record, I have low expectations for this game.KHAndAnime
and how exactly has their track record been bad? All their current tittles MADE BY THEM have been highly praised , hell oblivion is the most common game that other open world medieval rpg's are compared too. I f u dont like something about the game you could always get a mod for it, it dosent take a amazing or high up computer to play bethseda games on.
That trailer was surprisingly anticlimactic. So...dragons have returned and are terrorising the land, and we're the Chosen One who's going to save the day? Rightio. Hopefully they've got some deep and intricate gameplay to back up the rather weak premise.
...ha!
My experience with Morrowind was only ever a toe in the water. I literally played a couple of hours, most of that was walking. Oblivion made considerable improvements, but even in my limited experience I felt it lacked a fair bit in terms of a unique setting (namely dungeons and a sense of culture) compared to Morrowind. I really enjoyed Oblivion, but I hope they make a lot of improvements that don't invovle making it more accessable.
Some important considerations for me is a less accessable fast travel system (perhaps limited only between towns and cities, or restricted to owning a horse or something), better/more voice acting, and an actual interesting story. Oblivion was so boring, and it was not helped by the cloned Oblivion gates/dungeouns/forts/ruins/caves that all looked the exact same and had nothing interesting which was probably due to a poor levelling system. What's the point in levelling up if everything levels with you. One of the best things in RPG's is coming across a dungeon or cave that has too powerful enemies, then coming back later on to clear it put and see what good loot it has, OR going back to other places where you now feel stronger.
So yep, that's what it needs. Looking forward to this, but I hope it's made some improvements.

It seems clear TO ME, that the story will in fact have little to do with Oblivion's beyond that the opening of the gates disturbs slumbering dragons in Skyrim. This time I'm fairly certain we will play the main character (lol!) considering the reference to a "dragonborn." I am quite satisfied with the little revealed so far. There was never much wrong with Oblivion's artstyle... it was just the overuse of the same environs, a rather limited assortment of armors/apparel, and some ugly NPC faces. Anyways, you can hardly write things off yet. We're going to Skyrim, home of the Nords! That means more mead halls and less imperial guardsmen!Uhg, the Morrowind Vs Oblivion debates are just stale at this point, alright fanboys I have some bad news for you...they're BOTH FINE GAMES. Who cares about the majority? The masses love mediocrity.
This can be seen in many things in life: fastfood, crappy mainstream videogames, religion, etc.

You know, I think I hate all of those except for "crappy mainstream video games", since I honestly did enjoy Oblivion. Anyway, at the end of the day, I realize my incredibly amazing taste in music & films, abhorrence towards religion, and extreme dislike for pop culture doesn't necessarily make me better than anyone else. In the end, it's all just opinion. Religion, art, entertainment, food. What you view as crappy isn't necessarily some universal standard that people just fail to grasp because they are lower life forms than you are, or something.I was really hoping they would use id Tech 5, but oh well its just an engine.
This just yet another game to help bankrupt me next year.
