I am curious how much a person with a serious gaming habit spends on electric bill

Please only reply if you have a POWERFUL gaming PC, and other gaming consoles........

And only reply if you play at least 2 hours a day gaming.

How much is your electric bill due to gaming ...... thanks

Reason i ask is because i will soon be going to an apartment and want to know how the electric budgeting with gaming will turn out

Thanks for the info, because for some odd reason my electric bill is over 680 bucks currently.... i have a big house however, I am wondering how much other things consume the most out of the house.. refridge? Televisions ? lightbulbs ... My room i would say has the most advanced electronics.........360, ps3, and top of the line gaming PC.....plus 50 inch hdtv, and dual 24 inch gaming monitors.........But i have VERY good habits of turning off computer at night..........turning off consoles when not in use............and having HDTV off........... However sometimes i leave the two gaming 24 inch monitors on ........actually i leave it on alot...........but everything else i pretty much monitor

depends on the rates where you live. Where I am at, if i leave my machine running all day while at work plus the gaming I do in the evening (5-6 hours) + my gigantic TV and few lights.... 150 dollars or more total bill. new tech is coming out that will allow you to monitor the energy consumption of individual appliances in your home, but its a way aways from the mainstream consumer market.

If electricity costs you 15 cents per kilowatt-hour. Then... To run a computer that uses 400watts for 24 hours, 365 days a year.... 400w x 24hours x 365days = 3,504,000 watts or... 3,504 kilowatt hours. So... 3,405 x 0.15cents = $510.75 a year. Now, this math will only work if it is truly 400w an hour, anyone know if a computer uses 400w of power if that's 400w an hour? I am not sure how that works, but there's your simple math.

If you want to see how much juice you're actually using on any device, get one of those kill-a-watt things.

My wife got me one for Christmas. Very cool item to have.

I live in SoCal where power is pretty expensive. My parents bill would often top $200, but the highest I've ever had to pay in a month was $54 in my apartment during the summer with the a/c unit on 4-6 hrs a day. I only leave things on when I'm using them besides my pc, but I do turn it off over night unless it's downloading. My pc is usually on 4-8 hrs a day, and one of my tv's 1-3 hrs.

you'd save far more power turning off you heater. computers don't use that much, same as a few 150w light bulbs or about half as much as a one bar heater if that.

I had to do this math when my mom claimed I was kicking up the eletric bill.

I have my computer ( usually ) on 24/7, and it is a gaming rig with quite the higher than average specs. When I did the math, the total comes out to about $400 a year so that guy up there that posted w/ $500 or so isn't too far off. I'm running dual screen moniters as well, so those were put into the equation.

But yeah, to answer the question; usually between $400-500 dollars a year.

Turn off your heater!! 1500w is killer...

Change your lightbulbs to energy savers, 15w=75w brightness are awesome, so get them longer life too!!

Old fat televisions 300w, 100w LCD monitors, PS3 has a 300ishw PSU, but doesnt use all of its power. Fridge @ 1000w more or less

PC setups http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=PSU_Wattage dated, but still effective..

Idle 150-200??

Skulltrail + SLi = 700w peak I assume. Lowend @ 400w(at best).

I am thinking this on top of my head dont flame me if Im off.

I recommend DLP :D The slim PS3 consumes a bit less than the older models as i'm sure it's the same with the newer 360s. We have 1 PC and 3 HDTVs on for a few hours, then my PC (E7300/9800GTX+) is on all day crunching. ~$130, we hardly use the plasma now that thing not only sucked a lot of juice but it would heat up the room as well (bad if you're in socal). Don't forget to clean underneath your fridge and get better insulation for your home.

we ahve all of the above. 360, ps3, wii, 32inch LCD. two pcs and a laptop. most commonly used are ps3 for bluray and games, 360 for divx and games and the laptop to browse the net. the desktop that is on for like 5-8 hours a day is my lady's i7 920 with an 850wtt psu and a gtx 270 (6 gb ddr3, 1tb hdd, etc). plus occasional use of our spa out back puts us around $100-$150AU per 60 day period (closer to $150 if mates comes over for spa and LAN, they all have quad cores and core 2 duos and similar gfx cards)

actually most of your monthly/yearly comes from using the hair dryer, washing machine and dryer, refrigerator, and microwave. A gaming PC really won't make that much of a dent in your electric bill. Tips for saving money just try to air dry more things and try not to microwave too much stuff lol which is pretty hard to do for most people lol. Trust me I speak the truth :D

It's electronics that heat objects which tends to use most of the power. A gaming PC PSU may be able of providing 600W but in reality not all of that is used and esspescially not all the time however a kettle uses at least 1000W and when you flick that switch it's on full power for the duration. Room heaters and cookers are even worse. Install some loft insulation, close the windows and turn the heating down. This will save you much more than changing your PC PSU or not using it as much. You could also overclock one of your PCs more and then use that to provide extra heat, it's pretty efficient compared to room heaters and you get usefull processing cycles. Oh and turn the lights off, leaving all the lights on downstairs at my house uses more power than every PC i own combined.

Although a microwave uses a lot of joules, I mean it's only running at like 1500watts for like 5 minutes a day at max.

My bill ranges from 120ish for most of the year, and 160ish in the summer. Granted, I have a pretty energy efficient house.

It depends on how long you use it. A microwave would use, at most, maybe 1kWh per day, and that's if you're a hardcore microwave meal eater.

most devices have some sort of standby or idle mode, so most will draw power when off. switching off ur wall plug will save power and save ur items in case of a surge (they DO happen occaisonally for most of us)

while that is all well and good most people do not pay actual usage, People in my area pay Estimated Usage.

yeah most pcs idle at 150-250watts.

so it wouldnt be a constant 400watts, actually it would prolly sum up to alot less.
