Well this topic idea came to mind when I realize that the mass majority of my favorite games all had one element in common. This element was simply all consisted of a phenomenal Musical Score.

Feel free to share your idea of an important element that makes a great game...

You'll be surprised. It can be the smallest things that can draw you into a game to making it favorable.

I agree though that story and game play is important. However let's go beyond that perspective and think of even the little elements that can make a great game.

So true indeed. My #1 game has music I fall in love with.

Although I don't think Rally Sport Challange, Ninja Gaiden, and Rollor Coaster Tycoon has any good music. Actually RCT is perfect without music, the marry go around makes up everything. And oddly the Sim City 4 music makes my head explode when my bro was playing it.

I think everything is important, but gameplay with proper control is probably the most important part for me. CS has good gameplay but everyone can duplicate it, but its control, the feel of recoil and such that still make it addictive. Ninja Gaiden is not only gory and challanging AI, but the highly responsive attack tight control is what makes it feels right.

Speaking of Roller Coaster Tycoon, I can literally leave the game on all during the day due to the sound is so immersing from where you hear the coasters to the people yells and the new ride is available warning.

Memorable, likable characters. They don't necessarily break a game, but for me, they can sure as hell make it an awesome one. One of the reasons why I like ME so much.

Gravity Gun in Half Life 2 3D map in Splinter Cell : Chaos Theoy Torch and Gun switching in Doom 3 Music does play n important role...but tht shud be under audio..i feel even the voice acting n sound effects add to making a game astonishing..like sound effects of COD series..or Music of Civilization 4

story and settings, even the best of gameplay can grow tired over time, and gameplay eventually becomes outdated. Look at zelda, one of the greatest games of all time but if a new kid to games played it today, he wouldn't see what is so great about it. But a game with an amazing story and setting can bring even the newest gamers and suck them into their world, like fallout and deus ex, system shock 2. But one more element I find crucial to games is...ART DESIGN! I believe graphics can highten the overall experience of a game, like driving to a certain location in a ferrari compared to a grand am. But graphics become out dated over time. Games like fallout have the amazing story and settings, but the graphics that are very outdated can make the game hard to play, especially for newer gamers. But an overall amazing art direction can make the game look appealing even years later. Look at world of warcraft, now where near better looking the age of conan, but I prefer the graphics engine better just because it still looks great on my big monitor and graphics just match how the game is supposed to be. And it runs a hell of a lot better to.

But of course some games don't follow those elements and still manage to be amazing. Rollercoaster tycoon for example, it has no story or no real setting but the gameplay is so unique and addictive its still fun all these years later.

i love sim city 4's sound track really fitsthe game with classy jazz fusion in the background 8D

soundtrack plays an important roll for me too, but i liek a lush realistic landscape, kinda of like oblivions for example (i'm waiting to be flamed on this one lol) like not only a huge open world, but also lots of features like trees, mauntains, caves even small towns in between major locations. also with great AI that interacts with the enviorment, not just strafe behind the nearest wall or mindlessly gun you down.

Same. That is only for single player though. I actually might change my mind and go with the weapons I have. If the weapon is crap then I won't it takes away from the game, for me.

Singleplayer: Story, sound/music, believable characters and graphics. All of these add to the immersion for a good singleplayer game.

Multiplayer: Gameplay mechanics that work, balance, replay value, accessible but hard to master.

If a game has all the above, it's a good game.

Something unique, doesnt have to be revolutionary but something unique. Not graphics persay but a new approach in the game.

Story is also important
