Elite: Dangerous
Woot! I love space-sims, and along with Star Citizen, this one looks fairly awesome. What do you guys think?
The kickstarter still needs a bit of help, but I think they'll reach their goal. And more space-sims are always welcome.

I was a huge fan of the original Elite, pumped hundreds of hours into Elite on the Spectrum 48k. Then it went right down hill with subsequent "sequels" to Elite. I remember Frontier Elite 2 on the Amiga500 for all the wrong reasons, what a bug ridden mess that was. The sequel was so awful I didn't even bother with Frontiers: First Encounters and hell I am sure I remember reading stories that the game even formatted PC's it was that bug ridden.
I have very fond memories of the original Elite, but there is no way I am backing this for several reasons. Firstly I just got sick and tired of Braben constantly "promising" he was working on a successor to Elite (he has been promising Elite 4 for years). Secondly I have no faith in Braben to produce a competent product and thirdly I do not like the way he tacked onto Chris Roberts Kickstarter. The whole kickstarter comes across as "hey look how much Chris Roberts brought in, I want some of that pie".
If this game ever gets made (and I seriously have my doubts even if they do reach the kickstarter target) I will naturally check it out and get behind it. But there is no way I am stumping up cash based on Brabens history.

Well, considering he's showing live demos on the kickstarter page, that would seem to suggest he has been working on this game.
Perhaps the past should be forgiven for a chance to revive a genre we all miss?
Shouldn't a modern version of Elite just be called "L33T"?
To charmingcharlie's point, Elite literally was the first open world space sim but it's been pretty quiet for many years in spite of promises. Fortunately, with the nature of kickstarter, you can just sit idly by and wait to see if the game ever does make it out and then buy it then. :)

I'm thinking more along the lines of charmingcharlie on this one. Elite Dangerous is a game that has supposedly been in the works for so many years it makes Duke Nukem Forever look like a short project. DNF also produced various videos showing off the game for a number of years before being busted, bought out, then finally finished.
I don't trust what this is offering and there is no pressure from Kickstarter to ensure they do actually deliver something. Kickstarter is very much a case of handing over the money once the appeal ends successfully, then washing their hands of the project. While I am prepared to take a risk on a small independent outfit making a game that appeals to me, Braben is a veteran of the industry, surely has enough contacts to get funding for a game if he really wanted to make it, but has done nothing apart from talk until a seemingly easy opportunity to get free cash comes along so he jumps on the bandwagon.
I'll be happy to buy this if it does ever come out, but I'm not putting money upfront for something I doubt we will see.
Agreed. I was a massive fan of Elite : Frontier on my Amiga ( not so much the origional as I didn't like the wireframe graphics on my CPC 464 ) and have been waiting years for Braben to get his thumb out of his A** and get this made. I have no idea why he couldn't just take this to a decent publisher instead of kickstart. I really disagree with the multiplayer aspect of it though, it's a nice idea but it wouldn't work. Just ripe for hackers and they will destroy it, just like DayZ.I'm thinking more along the lines of charmingcharlie on this one.
