I just found some game on steam : Empire Total War Elite Units
To me it looks like it is just some(6) extra/elite units but $20 seems to be too much, does anyone knows what this pack is about ?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
If im not able to have the top tier units in MP mode with everyone else FAIRLY, im not buying this game. Its too bad, i was looking forward and eagerly waiting for it, now i cant buy it because of ignorance :-\ I didnt think the devs would be so dumb, why don't we have people who care about PC games and gamers making PC games instead of money wh0 res.. whatev!Dr_BrocoliWell don't feel so bad ... here is something to for you (if you are interested in DoW 2) Dawn of War 2 Fighting Piracy, DRM with Free DLC
They're also releasing different versions of the Special Forces Edition from different retailers, with an extra elite unit on top of that... but which one you get depends on where you buy it.
I expect the game will be cracked within a couple of months of release to allow players to use all possible units.
It's what's commonly known as "jerking off the customer to make a quick buck"
1. Make Game
2. Take out certain components of Game
3. Charge more for "Extra" content you already made
4. Profit
5. ???
I agree, its sad really...but people will fall for it and hand them preorder money. You know, this is a great idea. I can see this truly being the business model of the future. I mean come on, why can't you guys get in the grove for paying 3.00 dollars for a pixellated boat? It floats, it shoots, and it's has seamen. Who wouldn't pay 3 dollars for that?Cdscottiesadly it could be true, it's happening more and more now a days, hopefully pc gamers would avoid this so that this trend doesn't burgeon
Waste of money imho.
"True to the period, these exclusive elite units become available on the campaign map via a certain faction or once a specific geographical region is under control."
- Depending on which faction I take I still might not be able use the units
"This content is for use with Empire: Total War. Once Empire: Total War is installed the elite units will become available in the single player game."
- Doesn't even count for MP
Might as well just wait for a mod
wow .. so its just a case of milking with units that could have been there in the game but were taken just so that more money could be made , I am pretty disappointing - like Solidius said, they best part of all rts is unlocking the top tier units. Now I just hope these units are not in the multiplayer mode which is supposed to be present in the gamenavalhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4dfaylxz1A&feature=channel
No way am I buying the extra units. If people keep buying things like this then company's will keep trying to sell it.
So now we are picking on pre-order specials? Well... if that's what the cool kids are doing...
CA SUCKS, GO TO HELL YOU M*****F**RES!!!
This isn't a preorder special. It's a premium version of the game that costs $20 more than the standard version. All for 6 unique hero units. Not for each faction, mind you. 6 unique units total. So now we are picking on pre-order specials? Well... if that's what the cool kids are doing...

Odd, because I never really did care about any of those games.... anyway...
It's not like CA didn't give you a choice, you can buy the regular priced version, if you don't deem the Special Edition that costs an extra 20$ and only gives you 6 units fair, then don't buy it, is that so hard to understand? It's only six units, why give a rats ass?
It doesn't sound like you were one of the people upset about Warcraft 3 being priced at $60 simply because Blizzard deemed it fit. Or about Starcraft 2 being split into 3 installments. Or about the Horse Armor upgrade for Oblivion costing $20. If you can't see the problem with the VG industry arbitrarily and outrageously pricing games or minimal additional content then you really have no place in this discussion, and quite honestly I question your decision making abilities as a consumer. To be anything but outraged over this kind of highway robbery by purchasing the overpriced product only encourages companies to do it again and again.[QUOTE="sportwarrior"][QUOTE="ZuluEcho14"]
Why is everyone booing CA like they had committed a cardinal sin at making a special edition of the game? If you think it's to expensive THEN DON'T BUY IT buy the regular version, it's just six units and only some factions will receive at least 1 new unit, if you are b***ing because you want the units then you don't really have a choice, you are not going to get them free by threatening CA by saying you won't buy the game, the video game industry is a business like any other, if you really want the little extra goodies you will have to cough up a little extra dough.ZuluEcho14

Not hard to understand at all, considering every poster in this thread has said in one fashion or another they wouldn't be buying the special edition. Maybe you missed that? But people still care because they're being deprived of extra content because of the ridiculous business practices of the developer and/or publisher. Many people would pay the extra $10 for some extra units, but $20 is just idiocy. So again, fans of Total War and the RTS genre feel like they're being betrayed. THAT's the point here.I have to admit that I did buy the special forces edition. However, if it had been for 20 pounds more (american keyboard - no pound sign), I would not have bought it. No way is that worth it. Especially not for a Digital purchase download version. I only bought because it's the retail version, and it was only 5 pounds (less than $10) more than the standard version. Plus, because I had enough points built up to take off the 5 pounds, I only paid the same price it would cost me for the standard version. You will however get 1 special unit if you preorder regardless of what version of the game you buy.
So the question is; Would I have still bought the Special Forces Edition if I couldn't take the 5 pounds back off. I'm not too worried about 5 pounds or equal to less than $10. But not a chance, if it had been "ANY" more expensive. I am ashamed to see the normal price for the game is 15 pounds more than the standard (about $20) which I do think is outrageous. If it had been that much more, then definately no way would I buy it. For that much more, I would require a lot more to justify the extra cost, and not for in-game content. Because while all of us do like extra content, they are by no means show stoppers. Case in point:
Need for Speed Carbon: Collectors Edition - Lots of extra cars, but only playable in quick races. Unusable in single player, nor online..... Useless
For that much more, at the bear minimum, you would need substantial things such as with the following games which had excellent extra stuff to justify the extra cost.
Elder Scrolls Oblivion: Collectors Edition - Making of DVD, Artwork Book, Commemorative Coin, Full Fold-Out Map of the game world = 10 pounds more
World In Conflict: Collectors Edition - Making of DVD, History Channel: Modern Marvels - The Berlin Wall DVD, Piece of the Berlin Wall, Good Quality Headset with microphone (for online play) that usually goes for 15 pounds on it's own in stores. = 10 pounds more
At the bear minimum, to justify the cost of $20 more for the Special Forces Edition, on top of the "extra" units, you would have to at least have a making of DVD and an artwork book. Or even maybe another DVD of a proper history show documenting the climate and events of the time period their game takes place in would suit this game perfectly in a Collectors Edition (especially considering how much they boast about trying to keep historically accurate with this game) either on top of the other 2 items I mentioned earlier or in place of the artwork book.
As you can see, I did buy the Special Forces Edition, but for the price of the standard. But at the same time, I agree whole heartedly with the majority of you. For 5 pounds more, sure (but only for the retail version). For $10, thats really pushing it. For $20, no chance in hell. They need to offer a whole hell of a lot more to justify that much of a price increase. They should take a page or two from the books of Bethesda Softworks (Oblivion) and Massive Entertainment (World in Conflict). Particularly Massive, because their collectors edition was brilliant with how much more they gave considering the being only 10 pounds more (Well worth it). Creative Assembly or Sega, it doesn't matter. Whoever it is, they need to re-think their pricing point and either drop it to a more acceptable level, or offer some butter to put on top of the bread.
EDIT: I found on another site that the retail version of the Special Forces Edition does come with an Art book and a full Campain Map on top of the extra units. Again, this may justify the $10 more, but I don't think it justifies $20. If some of you do think it justifies the extra money to get the Special Forces Edition. Get the Retail Version... Not the download version. At least then you can also have some extras and actually have a hard copy of the game.
I'm rather annoyed with this as well. First and formost because I feel that $20 is WAY overboard. If it had been $5 and available as a small extra I would have been fine with it.
In general I really dislike any 'pre-order' or 'extra' content that has an actual effect on the game play without it being available after launch. Art books, Making off DVD's, Maps and widgest.. cool. Small ingame extras that are just for looks are fine. But this just feels cheap and way overpriced.
Given the cost, this strikes me as the thinnest 'expansion pack' I remeber seeing for any game.
That....is called sufficient reason for me not to buy this game. Granted, I was kind of on the line about whether I was going to get it or not. That just makes it an easy decision. I've been afraid PC game companies would start doing crap like this, and I refuse to support it. The might as well just call the regular game Empire: Partial War.SpaceMooseTo be fair, the full game has everything you could possibly want. The only things they're not including are 6 hero-type units that would only be available in single player wouldn't wouldn't really be buildable. I can certainly live without them. I just wish CA would give us a realistic and justifiable price for buying them. It just isn't worth the extra $20, even with a map and art book or whatever else is included in the physical edition.
Read somewhere that they were going to be included in multiplayer, but that their cost would be balanced with their strength so they won't screw up the balance. i.e. they will be online :|F1_2004Ah... well if that's the case, then I'm a little more irritated before.
They're also releasing different versions of the Special Forces Edition from different retailers, with an extra elite unit on top of that... but which one you get depends on where you buy it.

days. if that.
WoW........ People calm down! The elite unit pack is 10 dollars. The price of this game is 59.99 and the elite pack is 69.99. If u pre order the standard game it cost 49.99. But they do not give a pre order discount to the elite unit package. look at the game price at D2D.com and look at reduced prices section. You will find that the standard addition is 59.99. My idea is the expansion pack will cost 10 dollars if you already own the gam. So order the expansion pack after or wait till it drops or for a mod.
You made an account just for this? What, do you work for them or something?WoW........ People calm down! The elite unit pack is 10 dollars.
