Dunno, it depends on what sounds better.
Empire has its advantages; the naval warfare is cool, and I like how th ere are three campaign maps (Americas, Europe and Mediteranean, and India) and also an emphasis on trade and stuff like that.
Medieval is cool because, well, the time period is just awesome.
Idunno...Total War to me is melee combat and brutality. Empire is a good game, but it seems a bit more simplified than the others, and I just dont like the emphasis on guns; something awesome about watching two armies run full speed at eachothr and clash and battle.
Seeing two organized formations of soldiers stand there and shoot at eachother is...a bit underwhelming.
Truth be told, though, you cannot go wrong with either choice
I have been playing total war since Shogun... ah, Shogun what memories I have for thee..... alas, that was along time ago, when things were… were different, when there was an innocents about the game and you forgave its failings as we all fell in love with it, now of course things are different, it has all changed because of economics, greed. I have become so indifferent, apathetic about CA that it is sad to even think back then about shogun. I no longer pay any head to the spin and the propaganda that spill forth willingly from the sanctified doors of CA. I have lost all faith and cannot see a time when I will ever be able to trust them. After having the code they released as Empire, claimed as the greatest strategy game ever, to find that, it wasn't the greatest strategy game ever. No, I discover to my horror… as I looked at the AI in disbelief, they seemed not quite sure what to do, like actors at a rehearsal who have forgotten their lines… they just did the unexpected. In fact it was a great day if I managed to get to turn twenty…and I do have a next gen pc.
Where did it all go wrong? When did we become as complacent as to allow are selves to be fooled by what was nothing more than a beta code at best. I know that CA is a business but there has be a balance struck between us, the consumer and them, the company. This obviously isn't the case, also think about all those new to the TW and their experience of the TW game.
Now napoleon has reared his head above the parapet…his eyes nervously twitches behind him a Marshall from CA reassuring him that "there are more recruits sire" however I've decided I will not be following the dulcet drum of CA…but will hang up my musket and become a painter instead, maybe even create my very own movement in Brittany and invite all like minded thinkers to stay.
E:TW looks superb, it has unlimited amounts of potential but in this state is pretty average. I recently started M2:TW again and it's a superb game overall, even the graphics are extremely great imo when comparing them, graphics should even be taken into consideration, they both looks extremely well, but M2 has way better gameplay.
If you have M2:TW stick with it, get other games, like Anno 1401 :), not the same type of game but still an awesome game.
Medieval has Third Age mod and if you like Lord of the Rings then it's the game for you (Third Age mod is like its own game, I haven't even really played Medieval 2 before). :P
Empire is awesome. I have no idea what these flaws are that people talk about, and I have yet to encounter any bugs at all. I love the battles, and I still can't get over how great they look and feel to control. The turn based campaign is pretty complex and I have a really hard time playing it, but that's because I can't figure out how to do well in it. My instinct tells me to make one really big army that I can take around the land conquering things, but there are so many little elements that you have to defend, like farms and colleges and mines and whatever, and I can't figure out how you're supposed to be able to finance any kind of relevant armies to defend all those things. But the battles are great.
M:TW2 is only $20 with free shipping from newegg:

I say just get M:TW2 just for the price. They both good games.
my biggest gripe with ETW is that the time period sucks plain and simple. So boring compared to MTW or RTW or Shogun
