I'm tired of waiting for Bulldozer to arrive and will be doing a new build next month with either a 2500k or 2600k. I game mostly, but also multitask for schoolwork and other things. I don't really encode anything, but do run movies via media center for my kids while I'm gaming and whatnot. Would the 2600k be worth the extra $100 in such a situation, or should I just stick with the 2500k and spend the money on a better V card or whatnot? BTW: Dang you AMD for making me wait too long! I hope Bulldozer performs, but at this point Intel seems a safer bet and I can get my new build on next month rather than waiting for who knows when (October or later)

Just go for the 2500k, benchmarks show that theres not a huge difference, infact, a few frames, it's not worth it unless you do video encoding and all that jazz. whats your budget if you need further help?

Go with the 2500k. It'll handle all that just fine.

If you have to ask, then you dont need the 2600K. The 2600K is dramatically better than the 2500K, at a handful of very specific tasks. If you cared about these tasks, you would pick up the 2600K in a heartbeat out of the two.

I agree, very few tasks need the power of a 2600, and if you happen to be doing one of those, there would be no contest as to which one you would pick

Not sure on the budget yet. I'll have ~2k but I am not going to spend most of that on tech stuff. I'll probably spend about ~1k on the new build, but I'll be getting a case (Silverstone Raven v3), cpu, mb, 8 gigs of ram, and perhaps that Asus monitor that comes with the Nvidia 3d kit on newegg. I'll be needing another video card for the older computer which my wife will use, but I'm not sure which route I'll go on that yet. Maybe a 6770 or so I'm thinking. Bottom line...I'm upgrading my current rig, and am going to use the leftover parts to put together a family rig in my living room (where my current computer is). That machine is used as a gaming rig + media in the living room and for all the xboxes around my house to stream shows from. The new upgraded rig will be in my bedroom, and I'm going to replace my 32" 720p tv with the Asus 120hz 3d monitor. Next spring I hope to get another 2 monitors and another 570gtx to push them all! Hurray for 3d on 3 panels! Thanks for advice guys...so just to clarify, gaming and having xboxes stream off the computer at the same time won't benefit greatly from a jump to the i7?

Bulldozer is the reason i aint getting a new rig, also i want time to get the funds together without scrimping up every penny. If BD aint out about November i'll probably just get a 2500k build i hear BD is onto like it's forth or fifth amendment which tells me it's just a patch-job but hey if it performs well then great. Get the 2500k the hyperthreading isn't much use outside transcoding and applications.

I gave up on waiting recently too. The i5-2500k is amazing. My boots are waaay faster now then with the Phenom x4 965. I have mine clocked at 4.5 but I tried going to 4.8 Ghz on Air, and it was very very stable.
